Topic #88362 19 posts Started by czwalga
Anyone ever heard of one for a 6th gen, or anyone ever try and make one using rack/pinion gear from another vehicle?

Learned a lot in 10 years...I hardly log in anymore, last loginToday Sept 6 2019, and I was forced just to clarify a post. LOLIf you PM me and I dont respond, dont fret or cry. Yeah, I do have a spare rack.... but it's not very simple to just modify. The gearing has to be changed, which is built into the rack and pinion.

Unless i found a replacement that fit, not sure it would work.

Could you not remove the OEM piece from a spare, weld it over and then recut it?
If not, should be able to have it machined pretty easily out of a blank and then rethreaded on the ends.

i heard the ratio being different for superstrut and mcpherson vehicles. Thats what one member told me who went from mcpherson to superstrut suspension. his name is hardblacktop93

You will have bumpsteer issues if you put in a different geometry rack out of another vehicle.

I forgot the exact details but the tie-rod length has to be specifically proportional to the control arm length. If its too long or short the wheels will turn toe-in/toeout when you go over bumps(bumpsteer). The tierods must also be on a perfect axis with the roll-center of the suspension or some other suspension geometry point(I cant remember).
This is one of those things where the oem manufacturer knew exactly what they were doing when they designed it and without proper schooling all any of us can do is guess.

The idea of modifying the gear ratio of the rack and pinion gear sounds practical, maybe not cheap though.
i had once let someone drive my GT4 who had a regular celica, the first thing he noted was that the car turned alot more with the same steering input.

I hadn't really noticed myself as i had an SS-III before that

turns faster yes, but doesn't turn as much, suspension reasons my guess

AWD binds up anyways, but i think in general theres a reason why high speed cornering cars are poor at making low speed turns, like some kind of tradeoff

though no st20* celica has ever been praised for its turning radius, superstrut or not

I used one like this on my BMW, works great as long as you have power steering.

This is interesting. Might have to try a 1.5x quicker.

It's an easy install, just cut the steering column and add it under the dash. You'll need to keep the powersteering even with the 1.5:1 or your arms will get really tired by the end of a stage/session.

I'm thinking about doing it to my Road Race Celica too.
player is that picture of a ST205 superstrut ratio rack??

read the line above the picture wink.gif

OEM vw piece on the left, Quick on the right.

I could have compared ST205 vs ST204/AT200...but I think I might have already thrown away my USDM steering rack.

The vw after OEM stands for Volkswagen?
