Pulling engine - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #89042 14 posts Started by acidice333
Is there somewhere in a BGB about pulling the 5SFE engine from a 94? I'm looking for a decent how to'ish like the 5th gen BGB.

I'm stuck on a few things like how to get to the rear motor mount.. I popped off the two plastic covers on the crossmember? but where do those 3 bolts (2 in one, 1 in the other) goto?

just take them off and youll find out what they go to!

its actually really simple to take out the mount, its a whole different monster to put it back together

Haha exactly what he said!

One of the downpipe mounts are connected in that area.
take the large bolt out through the drivers side wheel well area first. take the wheel off and you will see it in there. i wrote a guide for pulling a 2ZZ out of a 7th gen. there are a few differences but it will help

Large bolt?

I actually don't know what large bolt Smaay is talking about..I don't remember seeing the motor mount bolt through the driver wheel well..?

What I did to get that rear motor mount bolt out is first, take off the b-pipe mount and *try* to move it out of the way the best you can and I got in there with a breaker bar and a ratchet. I went through the frame and the subframe from the rear.

I'd suggest taking the b pipe completely off. Clears up quite a bit of room. I couldn't because all of my exhaust bolts were rusted and stuck..

The large bolt Smaay is referring to is the bolt that holds the mount to the back of the transmission. It is easiest to see from the drivers side wheel well once the tires are off.

The best way ive learned to take the rear mount out was to undo thet two bolts and one nut that holds the mount to the crossmember and then take out the two bolts holding the steering rack into place.

Once the steering rack bolts are out, it will give you enough play to push the steering rack up and the rear mount will come right out. Edit: with a little wiggle work.

you will have to undo the front motor mount as well so that way you can pivet the crossmemeber up and down to help get the rear mount out.

That is exactly how I do it. This works.

Have patience, its going to suck no matter what you do.
Lol its one of those tasks that you just have to eyeball and figure out the best way to apply force to move the mount into place.

The hard part for me is always running the center bolt back in. You have to torque the whole engine into place to thread the bolt through.
that sounds like more work to do. i have never had an issue or a need to move the steering rack. in fact i dont even loosen the mount that is on the cross member. i just remove the single bolt through the drivers side wheel and the engine lifts right out. of course after the other are undone too.

well the driver wheel was gonna come out anyways to pull out the axle. I ended up using a long extension and my impact gun to remove that rear mount bolt.

I've pulled a handful of engines so I know the basics I was just worried about if I had to pull the center member or not because you have to raise the left and drop the trans side in order to pull it out.

Somehow I managed but I don't imagine it will be easy to get it back in

i have a load leveler so i can tilt the engine to get under the drivers side frame mount then level it out to mount up everything else. well worth the 40 bucks are Harbor Freight

Yeah I have one also but for some reason it wouldn't tilt very much I thought it was bottoming out on the center member but it ended up being I think the front motor mount getting wedged with the bracket

i take the front motor mount out first. i remove the mount from the transmission and the cross member so there is nothing in the way.
