I don't know on this specific car, but that is what the AE86 guys do when they toss in the 3sgte

That's not a 3S. Note the turbo location and intake manifold location. On a 3S, the cam gears pointing to the front would mean the turbo would be on the right side when facing the front of the car.
That's a 2JZ, and it sure as hell sounds like one.
