MR2 or JDM GT4??? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #8957 21 posts Started by pbgcelica
Aight, I have been reading a little, but between college and work, I haven't had enough time to read everything, so I don't know if this is a repost... BUT I was wondering if a 3sgte from a USDM mr2 (if a 3sgte motor available in it) is the same thing as a 3sgte from a JDM celica gt4... my thinking is that a 3sgte is a 3sgte is a 3sgte, but with the mr2 being a mid-engine it could change the engine around. OH and I am talking about a 3 gen. 3sgte from a 94 on gt4...

Thanks for the help
You answered your own questions! >smile.gif> But the 3rd gen 3SGTE is totally different...and sexy...and juicy...and OK...I SHUT UP! >biggrin.gif>

He's right. It basically all depends on the power!

For starters... there were no USDM MR2's that came with a 3rd gen out of the factory...

There are quite a number of differences b/w the setup of the MR2 3s with that of the GT4. The motor itself is practically the same... but certain things are different...
also, swaps have been made from both cars, so they are both feasable, it all just depends on your resources I guess
both motors will work, however there are differences. the USDM mr2 always came with the 2nd gen 3sgte. however this motor is still different than the USDM Alltrac Celica's 3sgte. the JDM MR2 3sgte motor (making 245BHP) still has differences from the jdm GT-4 motor.

this is directly pulled off the newbie forum on the MR2 owners club messageboard. these are the differences between the USDM gen2 MR2 motor, and the gen3 MR2 motor. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY GT-4 MOTORS.

you'll also find that it will be much easier to find parts for the MR2 version because it is USDM, so parts will be more readily availalbe and most likely cheaper over here
Please keep in mind that it won't necessarily be that difficult to get parts for a gen 3 motor. Some parts from the gen 2 motor can be used... others can be found from other cars.

For example, the thermostat for a gen 3 is the exact same thing as the one they use in a Landcruiser...

And to be honest... how often will you have to replace parts like that? >tongue.gif>
ummm, ct20b, ahhh <---- drool

id personally rather get a TD-06 kit than a CT-20b, both are very sweet though.

I didnt know stock boost on an MR2T was 10psi, its 8.5 stock on the alltrac's so what are the stock MR2T's pushing? (USDM)

stock MR2 ranges from 8.6-10.0 PSI under normal conditions. ive also heard lots of people with just filter and exhaust mods, hit the fuel cut from boost creep...

QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.
keep inmind that the US had the 2nd Gen Alltrac, so if you get a 2nd Gen 3sgte, parts are all availabe in the US. If you get an ST205 3sgte then I do believe your going to have to look else where for parts.

If you get a 2ng gen, ALL parts will be available in the US. A very big deciding factor for me on which gen to get. Its just alot less hassel and you will always know that you can get a part without searching the world twice over.
i have mr2 engine and tranny in my baby.... look at sig, and/or profile... fits pretty well. works pretty, well. stock boost is 10psi, turned it up to 18, then overboosted and cracked a piston >frown.gif>
... whatd you have your FCD set at?? rule of thumb on the MR2 boards is not to push it past 14-15PSI with a 17PSI fuel cut untill doing some upgrades to the motor... theres other ways to make big HP on those motors rather than just cranking up the boost.
