Question here:
It looks like you could conceivably remove the engine without really touching the AC compressor by just removing the two bolts and then sort of tying up the compressor to the radiator (carefully, of course).
Has anyone tried this? Or should I just suck it up and get the system drained so I can remove it at will?

The only reason I'd recommend to drain it somewhere first is if you're going to replace the engine where the compressor is incompatible.
That's what the 7th gen guys do. I don't see why it couldn't work on our cars too.

I just let it dangle slightly below the engine (supported of course) so its out of the way. If I were to replace the compressor (or any other A/C system part) then I would evac the system.
I tied it with a couple of shoe strings and a piece of long metal wire to the radiator support. It's been there for at least 2 months now and it hasn't fallen down yet
