Was looking into dropping one of these into my car in the near future to replace my ageing 5s. From what I've read, it's just a 2.0 ltr version of the 5sfe. Does anyone know if common replacement parts like the water pump, seals, gaskets etc are the same?

Yes. For the most part the engine is the same. The major change for both is in the internals of the engine, mainly smaller bore pistons and a shorter stroke.
To directly answer your question, your water inlets/outlets should stay in the same location, the intake manifold, throttle body locations should stay the same, the water pump and oil pumps are the same, and I believe that most seals and gaskets don't change.
However I'd make sure everything is compatible with the 3S-FE when purchasing your parts.

Was looking into it mainly due to it being a budget friendly option. My celica is a daily driver right now that's used for delivery. I can get a 3sfe shipped to my door for about $700, any low millage 5s engines I've seen are $1k and up plus shipping. Ideally I'd like a beams, I just don't know how long my current engine will last(leaks a qt of oil per tank of fuel Amongst a few other small issues) and allow me to save up.
Don't do the 3sfe, its a lot slower than the 5sfe. Is your engine on its way out or is it just getting up there in mileage? Mines at 251k and still going strong!
My car has 205k. Pulls strong, just has a tick in the top end if I'm not running 10w40, has a high pitch whine from the timing area,and leaks from the crankshaft seal. Going to be replacing the seals, water pump, and timing belt/tensioner soon. Just worried something else will fail.
I think I would go for a 3sge swap instead. There's plenty of guys here who have done it and their threads are like working manuals. I've been in a celica with a 3sge swap (the red one) and it was pretty powerful. Definitely a great power increase over the 5sfe.
for the price you would pay for the motor and fitting, replacing parts etc, why don't you just buy a run about for the time being? I mean, you said its only being used for a delivery car, meanwhile if you are a fan of the Celica, save up for an upgrade (3sge) or direct replacement 5s motor?
Sounds like all of your problems would be fixed if you replace the timing belt and all the accessories that go along with it. Replacing the crank seal wouldn't be a big deal at all while you had that side of the motor apart.

oil pump seal is what's pissing oil so badly.

i dont think there is a seal on the oil pump. its FIPG in place

Oil pump's got a seal under the pump gear, and it's also got a gasket (either paper gasket or the oem plastic-y composite)

Thanks for the advice guys. With the feedback I've gathered, I'll be setting some time aside in the near future to do an overhaul on all the parts in the timing area. I'll probably also do a compression test, and pop the valve cover and oil pan off at the same time to do an inspection/general cleaning. What is an acceptable range for each cylinder when i go to test them? Also, I should note that although I'm using the car for delivery right now, I'd rather not be. My other car took a crap and this was supposed to be a project car.
