its my fault. NO BRAKES - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #90563 15 posts Started by CrossCudi
So my spacers came in with my extended studs for my rear,
I raised my car, removed the wheel, found my 2 screws to insert in
the available location to removed the rotor. as I kept screwing away
the rotor was moving out but it was coming off. than I noticed I had my Ebrakes up !!!!

I knew from the amount of screwing I did I had to damage something inside.
I released my ebreaks and the pressure was releases and rotor came off along with these:

I was so mad at myself, so I continued with the process,
the other side was done successfully and noticed that
those parts came from here:

I knew that was a crucial damage...

got in my car after I was done and break pad when pressed just sunk straight down with no pressure..
stepped on it a few times and still the same..

now I have no brakes and looks like I will need a new driver side rear drum setup.. ?

Your brake hardware fell out. You can easily get them at your favorite auto parts store for less than $15. By the reading of your post, it may sound like you need a new drum brake wheel cylinder that activates the drum brakes on the side that fell out. You may also want to check the shoes and the drum itself.
thanks, I just called, u were right they had everything u mention.

thanks again thumbsup.gif

do the easier fix and switch to discs in the back. hahahah that's what I'm waiting to do. I hate changing the drum brakes.

Follow that to bleed the brakes, however its pretty likely you may have damaged the wheel cylinder on that side and the brake line may not be in the best shape, can of worms situation here. Check the wheel cylinders by popping the rubber boots on them back and looking for fluid. If you see fluid, you need new wheel cylinders.

Drum brakes are prob the most difficult as *uck brakes to work on. It still takes me several tries to get all the springs back on right adjust the brakes right and then the E-brake and then drive around take the drum back out and check to make sure the shoes aren't holding the drums down or the wheel cylinders are leaking. PITA.
wow this job really sucked,.. !

never knew how many springs u had to replace
and pulling and having the right and PERFECT settings for this to work..

after taking about 3 hrs just on one,
going from the left one to the right one to match up correctly
the other took 15mins.

bleeding was alot easier having my friend help me.

Lesson Learn: dont forget to release Ebrakes while removing Drums !

Thanks alot guys !

That's a lesson to be learnt (gotta love archaic spellings) for disc setups too, since Toyota uses a drum-in-disc design with a drum emergency brake.
