MR2 passenger side axle curiosity - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #90831 7 posts Started by Syaoran
Hey guys,

I've been trying to find info on this but I can't seem to find anything clear on it. I've seen before that the MR2 doesn't use a carrier bearing for the long axle, and that their axle can be used in a Celica with no ill effects. Is that true?

what MR2? the Turbo mr2 has a carrier bearing and will only work with an E153 transmission. if you have that; the INNER part of the axle will work, but you will have to get different outers and axle spacers.

the 2.2 5Sfe? I have no clue, but my guess is yes carrier bearing, no it will not work for a celica. Shafts should be shorter.

Talking about the 2.2L. I read somewhere but I can't remember exactly where that they didn't use a carrier bearing in the MR2 SW21

yea, IIRC the non turbo mr2 dont use the carrier, much like the early celicas, and camrys that didnt either.
the carrier is what holds the axle in place in our trannys, so those axles wont work, because IIRC they use a snap ring like the drivers side axle.

That's the answer I wanted. So, if I had an S53, you think it would work? My transmission is definitely not the original one from the car and I have a feeling that based on the availability of S53s here in Puerto Rico, I might have an S53 and not an S54.

im not sure, but i would always prefer the carrier bracket over not having it, especially with the turbo.

the non turbo MR2 does NOT use an axle carrier. its a really long axle so yes you could use that. as long as the splines match up in your hub
