Lightweight racing wheels - 6G Celicas Forums

Hey guys,

Just looking ahead towards my build I wanted to get some lighter wheels for the track to mount some R compound rubber on. I came across this jem and am trying to keep 17" rims for track use: http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/WheelCloseU...mp;autoModClar=

They are the absolute lightest wheel tirerack carries, even lighter than O.Z.'s. In 17" for a wheel to be 15.5 pounds is amazing as far as I'm concerned. For them to run $199 each is a freakin' cherry on top.

Anyone have any thoughts on these? Other options to take a look at perhaps?

I'm sure there are lighter wheels out there but not for under $1k a piece.
Kosei has very light weight wheels. The K1's are another model of theirs that is light.

I am willing to sacfrice some weight for style but if you dont mind just go with Kosei's or you can look at Enkei's RPF01's which will be pound or two heavier but may look a bit better.
There are more lightweight wheels out there that will fit in your budget but if you are trying to stay in that 15lb range just go with those K4R's

Just curious, why are you going with 17" wheels for track use?

Mike, do you have any idea what the OE 15" wheels weigh?

the steelies? I think they are around 30-32lbs. I had the number written somewhere but I cant find it.

not sure. I would guess in the mid twenties

I was looking at 17's more for the added traction the width would allow. If I was looking at stock 15's the same wheel runs $40 cheaper and weighs under 11lb lol. The car right now has 17" 5zingens if im not mistaken.
you can get 16" wheels with the same width you be able to get with the 17"s though.
you'd be saving a bit of unnecessary weight

Thanks for the heads up... its a ways away just started browsing yesterday to get an idea. The 16" are around 12.5lb I think.

So... FTIW, we run 15"x7" OE wheels

- The wheels are cheap (our team has 10 wheels - looking for 2 more)
- The tires are more affordable (we tend to use 6 tires a race, completely consuming 2)
- Because the tracks are traditionally tight and twisty, we wanted to take advantage of the better acceleration a smaller wheel would provide

If you are truly running a stock car, I don't *anticipate* you running out of traction and needing a wider tire... If you want to do something sick, the Fiero wheel fits and its a 15"x9"

The car is a 3sgte swap with an ems turbo... I anticipate traction loss... lol. Ill probably go with something a little more durable than soft Hoosier's that'll last me several weekends.

Now by track you actually mean track correct? Not auto-x right?

durability isnt a word that should be a concern when talking about tires, especially if you arent doing endurance.
That is if you are trying to really shave down your time. If not. ADVAN AD08 it up!!! biggrin.gif

Guess it was silly of me to think track for me was track for everyone else...

I meant non-drag racing, mostly track. So for tires I was thinking something in the Nitto NT01 range as opposed to like I said, soft compound Hoosiers.

Might be going to Summit Point as early as April of this coming year for some track time. My wifes boss runs a C-mod racer with the BMW CCA. I couldn't drive in the instructional classes last time because he was racing it so didn't even bring his second seat.

I personally am not a fan of Kosei wheels. You get a light wheel but I've read too many stories of bent/cracked Kosei wheels to trust them as much as an RPF1.

Were most of them running the wheels on the streets though? I plan on having these exclusively for the track so I don't see any pot holes, speed bumps or curbs in their future.

If it were you knowing this... would you still avoid them?
