5sfe + 3sgte head - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #91846 8 posts Started by VavAlephVav
So I've been reading the available threads on this subject and have just a few more questions...

given there are no 94-99 turbos likely to be lying around in the US, would you just find one from the turbo 91-93 motor? (or is there a particular year that works best)
I have seen that you need a special head gasket (can't find that thread rtm) to make it work right, especially since I have one of the later model 5sfe.
but it just bolts right on right?

other than that what else will have to be changed? I'm guessing you will have to use the distributor system from the 3sgte, but will the cam sensor plug right in
or do you have to change the ECU or other electronics as well?

and the timing belt side? surely the 5sfe timing belt won't fit, do you just use the 3sgte belt with the 5s tensioner/idler ect? or are there other modifications needed?

So I understand that the 5s doesn't have race quality components in the bottom, and I wouldn't expect it to just bolt up and be that amazing, yet I bet it'd be a big improvement
just to swap the head and still run it N/A.
I imagine you need the exhaust header for the 3sgte as well, what about the intake manifold?

It's just that I have to replace the head gasket anyway, and if once he opens it up and would find that there's actually a crack in the head itself then I may consider
getting this head instead of getting the regular 5s head.

some of the threads I've been getting this from

can anybody help me find the thread that had a link to the site that sells the special head gasket again? I cant find it :{

ha, I just saw a thread yesterday that talked about the later 5sfe(+96) has more cooling holes and you need a particular head gasket to make it work right
and they had a link to a race site that special made one just for fitting the 3sgte head to the 5sfe.
but now I cant find it : /

! but I just remembered that I favorite the page when I went to their website

I've seen lots of threads with people saying that it is just better to swap the whole 3sgte motor with turbo and all then to try and build a 5s into a turbo.
In fact if you take the whole thing apart and put race quality parts in the bottom end and boost it, it costs a pile of money and is almost too much motor
for the little car.

but I want to just swap the head and not boost it. I'm pretty sure you need the exhaust header and intake manifold switched as well. but I'm not sure whatelse
is needed beyond that.

and car-part.com shows two heads in NC for $100 O.O

swapping a 3s head on a 5s is basicly a 3sgte swap. plus the extra work of getting the oiling system for the turbo right, and any misc. hoses and what not that need to be adapted.
its not as easy as just bolting on the 3s head, you need to run complete 3sgte electronics, fuel system, ect.

Therefore it's more worthwhile from a time and finance standpoint to just swap to a 3sgte

which is pretty much what I had gathered from the threads if you were gonna make it turbo, I had wondered if it was much easier if you kept it N/A.
but if you have to redo the whole damn electronics and fuel system well its probably even better to just go ahead and get the 6cyl.

lately I'm feeling like I'm just gonna run some Steel Seal through it and see if that will last a couple years, cause I can go to get another 5sfe for <$500

I called Gude awhile back about their head package, they said it makes around 35 whp and its $1100 if you send them a core.
you also need to use the 3S-GTE coil, igniter, and crank gear.

Im getting ready to build a 5S block 3S-GTE engine right now. just need the time.
