Which 3sgte gen is best ? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #92180 14 posts Started by CrossCudi
All four generations will fit the same, using the same motor mounts, so that isn't really relevant. Most will argue that the 3rd gen is the best since it you can get more power without opening it up. Some may argue that the 4th gen is best since it has a stronger block and spools quicker.

Personally I'd go for the 3rd gen. It's the easiest to wire in and can handle 330 whp. Not bad for a 2 liter inline four.

The link you have posted is to a 3sgte from an MR2 so be aware of that. Your best option would be to get a full clip from a GT-4 that way you aren't missing any parts.

I thought the same thing, but after reading the stickie I read the clip is a lot more expensive with many useless parts.
but I agree, I might just look for a clip !

Thanks thumbsup.gif

Actually a clip is quite the opposite. You pay a little but more up front to get everything you need for the swap. If you buy an engine set, you'll spend a lot if time tracking down small parts and paying more for them. When you are finished with a clip, you have parts you can sell to recoup some of your money. It's the way to go if you can afford the upfront cost.

If you want to overhaul a 3s get a gen 4, the block is the business! Or if you are leaving it standard go for a gen 3! I have had 9 st205's now im yet to break one of the engines. Touch wood smile.gif

I'm very insecure about this ,...

If they are a larger company they will have quite a bit of feedback. Check that out, its always a little bit of a gamble when buying something you cant see. And shipping back for refunds or replace, is almost too much of a hassle sometimes with larger items
Ive bough two 7afes off ebay. Now they weren't 3s from japan, but they were fine

Haha play nice tongue.gif i love em! If only the profile aloud more than 5 cars.. Second hand engines is a gamble, from my experience there are plenty of 3s engines that dont go as they should. Here in NZ id say half the 205s drive like a non turbo. Still to figure exactly why. So really a gamble :0, i guess consider into the deal you may have to spend money refurbishing it if you get stung. Worst case

I purchased a clip a few years ago (outside of ebay). I took a risk and went with a newer company. Luckily everything worked out pretty well.

some considerations:

-Try to stick with a company that is located in the US. That way you have a better shot to resolve a dispute if one arises. Over seas or across the border gives them the freedom to screw you over.

-Absolutely pay with paypal. No exceptions. This gives you the greatest amount of protection.

-Do your research and ask the right questions. Demand a compression test video and have them prove they are indeed showing the results from your particular clip. Some places will even start the engine in the clip for you, which is a huge plus because it confirms that all of the electronics work.

-Beware of clips that seem to be modified. It stands to reason that the kind of person that modified the engine, was the same kind of person that beat the crap out of it. Stay away from those.

-know everything about the engine before you buy it. everything. That way you can spot anything that looks strange in their photos. It's really easy to hide huge problems in something as complex as a clip.

Ebay does give an added layer of security, but in the end, a part of it still comes down to luck. I say at least be mentally prepared to do a complete overhaul on the engine before tackling a project like this.
