My Speedomoeter needle sticks - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #9263 11 posts Started by Cody
So like, backstory: got indiglo guages, had them in for a while, decided I didn't want them, so I took them out. The night I took them out, my speedo was working fine. The next day I'm driving to work, and the needle wont move at all. Then I tapped my guage cluster with my finger, and it started to move. Now it only moves like say, if I get up to 20MPH, then the needle shoots up to 20MPH...and if it doesn't do that, I gotta tap it with my finger. Any ideas?
I don't think I broke the needles. I took the caps off. I didn't pull them out. As a last resort, if I buy a new guage cluster, can I set the mileage to match the one on my odometer?

When you put the caps back on the needles after taking off the indiglos, you might have just pushed them down a bit too hard. This would push the needle closer to the gauge where it could stick occasionally.

As a first, cheap option, I'd say pull off the plastic glass covering the dashboard, then either pull the caps off the needles again and put them back on real gently or just carefully give the centre of the needles a jiggle - which might raise them slightly.

Also make sure there's no adhesive left on the gauges from the double sided tape. Often it looks clean, but is still sticky to the touch.

Hope this helps >smile.gif>
I think I did push it down too hard, because my speedo needle looks closer to the surface of the guage than my tach needle does...so I'll try pulling the needle up a lil' bit.
...I can do that safely, right? I mean, as long as I don't pull the whole thing out, right?
my bro did that on his civic, an he just replaced his spedo, you dont have to replace the whole thing, as far as i know
Can you even buy them seperate? And still, I wanna know if I really MUST replace the speedo, can I set the odometer on it to match the mileage on mine?

Well, as long as you say you fixed it just by jiggling, then I think I'll be fine. It's not like I pushed down REALLY hard. I'll just try working on it tomorrow (I've pulled my guage cluster at LEAST 10 times within the last week). But a TRD guage does sound cool...except well, you know it's KM/h.
Thanks much for the advice, neophile. It's working like normal now. I'm a happy man now. >biggrin.gif>
