Just wondering if a 91 MR2 LSD transmission will fit my 1995 5sfe celica? Also it would still be FWD right? Just swap it in if it fits? someone is selling one for $300

Yes, it'll fit, but I don't recommend it at all. The gears are too long for the underpowered 5S so your car will be slower, the trans is heavier, you need custom axles, different shift cables, and the shifter brackets on the trans are facing the wrong direction. If you really want an E153, it's easiest to get one from a Camry or Solara, but it's best to keep the S54 until you have a lot more power.

That sounds like a lot of work. I'm planning on turbo charging it. I have a stage 3 clutch waiting for me across the border. That should be enough. Is the Camry tranny better or the same?

I've been waiting for someone with more hands-on experience to reply, but I'll share the modest knowledge I have of the E153. It's heavier than the S54 by a decent amount, and with longer gearing it's not ideal for a stock/close to stock 5S. From what I've read, 300 whp seems to be the point when the longer gearing becomes beneficial (again, need someone with more experience to verify that.) The E153 has a 21 spline input shaft where the S54 has a 20 spline, so the clutch discs are not interchangeable. The clutch setup you have will work for your S54, but will not work if you pick the E153 up. The shift brackets are on the opposite sides of the transmission depending on whether you get an E153 out of a Camry or an MR2. The MR2 trans needs modification to be used in a Celica because of this, where the Camry E153 bolts right up. Again, I am not sure about whether the Camry/Solara ever came with LSD, but I know the MR2's did.

the LSD didnt come in the MR2 until 93 and even then it wasnt all of them and only the turbo.

Yes, Richee3 is correct. An MR2 E153 is absolutely pointless in a 5sfe powered anything. But especially a front wheel drive car when the E153 is designed for a rear drive car like the.... ahem.... Mr2. You will be fine with your S series trans up to around 300 whp assuming you drive like an adult. Good luck. Have a nice night guys.

where did you get that from, you cant possibly be any more wrong. the E153 came in the Camry and Solara. those are both FWD. its a good trans with tall gears so it has low RPMs in 5th.

The ES300's were all automatics, so no E153 available. LSD is limited slip differential, which basically means that both wheels get power to pull the car, instead of an open differential which sends the power down the path of least resistance. An open diff will only put power to one wheel. Some of the MR2 E153's had LSD, as Smaay mentioned above.

Sorry, I guess I was unclear. I was saying that it is not an efficient use of money putting an E series transmission in when the only benefit is lower rpm while cruising. We run S series transmissions on 300 whp MR2 turbos with no issues. The only reason our customers change to E series transmissions is to hold more power. I should have been more clear in my language. As for a better use of money, just swap a 3sgte drivetrain and motor in and get the best of both worlds. Quieter cruising and power. Good luck with whatever you do OP.
