LED Third Brake Light - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #93865 11 posts Started by Tigawoods
finished up my led third brake light and its held up through a week of testing without any issue

>>FS THREAD>>

At the moment I have enough supply to make 5 more, and am looking to see if anyone has any interest in one. These will be Plug&Play and will swap out with the unit you have in.
I am looking at offering a "buy back rebate" option for people who send back their old unit (so that I can make more) and I would paypal them back a certain amount.

pictured the steps and then the final installed, any input or suggestions are welcome!

(different board but same is done for all)

How is the light output, compared to the tails let's say?

on par at 14.5 volts when the car is running. a little less than when at 12v (which is what these pictures were taken at)

I'd be interested swapping to LEDs, let me know if you set a price for selling these units.

1997 ST:Limitedly GreenThis car is not about racing... This car is not about power or performance... It's purely about being cool.
what strobe module do you have?
I have (FL2S-10A) from superbrightleds. I like it needs strobe a bit slower.

I have a price in mind and will be putting together the first one ready to sell tomorrow.

Stay tuned for details!

You can use a buck/boost module to ensure it's always getting 14.5 volts, I use one on a LED 3rd brake in my Mazda to stop it from dimming at idle in gear when alt output is lower. Works fantastic!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/N-DC-DC-Boost-Buck...=item5d4577b008 same or similar to this one. Voltage goes in, set voltage always comes out. Car can swing from 11 to 14.5, but you'll always get 14.5 out if you've set it to that BUT you can also use it to protect from over voltage since it'll drop it down to the set voltage if you go higher. It's like magic. The ideal way to do your light though would be to build the LED array for less than 12V, say 7.5 volts and then use a vreg to step it down from whatever to driving voltage, that way it's always bright no matter what and you only need one extra part instead of the more complex buck/boost.

yeeesh! I havent seen my voltage drop that low! mine drops to around 13.8 from time to time.
thats a pretty neat item! thanks for the share!

I might just grab one and make a new board for it. Id love to make one, but it would cost me alot more than $2 to do it frown.gif

11V would be when cranking, I know why would you care if your lights work when you're cranking? Just picked a low extreme to show how well a buck/boost copes. But like I said, best way is to just build to a lower target voltage and then regulate the car down to that to power them with simple single part vreg. You can get the vregs by the dozens for a few dollars, usually about 75 cents each when buying in quantity on ebay or aliexpress.
