Speedometer not working - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #95166 8 posts Started by Arturio55
yesterday my car was driving fine. I drove it home in a bunch of snow.
it kept snowing.
today i leave fo work and my speedometer was jumping all over the place -- everything else was working fine tho.
while idling it was going up and down fairly quick.

several hours later im on my lunch break, still not working.

Could ice have been on it, melted, and maybe got the contacts wet? did it just up and die?

Other gauges are working fine and dash lights come on so its not a fuse.
Any help appreciated

Speedo sensor is probably dead, they're plastic and will eventually give out.

Yes but would it "dying" cause it to jump around like that? Seems more like an electrical problem

Then again the internals of the sensor could cause the electrical problems

The gear slipping would. Not sure why the gauge would arbitrarily stop working without recent tampering, but it's possible too.

Nah havent touched the gauge. Guess ill start looking for a speed sensor

Also, i understand what you meant by the gear slipping -- but how would that happen while the car is parked? The diff wouldn't be moving at all

I didn't see that. Being it's electronic and not mechanical it could be.
