need help to tighten my valve lash - 6G Celicas Forums

My head is off. I have purchased delta cams 264 weld and grind. The guy at Delta said I have to adjust my valves and tighten the lash. He says 0.006 thou on the intake and 0.008 on the exhaust side. He said I have to either lap the valves more or grind the valve stems to compensate for the difference. My new valves are .015 -.005 thou short.
Should I bolt the cams onto the head or can I just rest them on top and check the clearance between the lifters and the cam lobes? Will I need to remove the valve springs? I'm doing this all backwards, I just spent two hours putting the valve springs back in with needle nose pliers. Is there another way??

I'm confused; do you have too much clearance, or not enough? Grinding the stems will increase the clearance, and lapping the valves shouldn't change the clearance at all.

Check your clearances as they would be with everything assembled (cams bolted down), this is the only way to find out which direction and how far you need to go (more or less clearance).
actually lapping the valves does. it grinds away the material on the valve seat actually raising the stem height.

I haven't done anything yet but my valves are 5-15 thou to short.
should i do this with the valve springs in or out?

I made some stainless steel 0.005" shims to help me tighten my valve lash they seem to fit well.

do not use those!!!! that will raise the level of the shim and it will be spit out by the cams. DO IT RIGHT, GET THE RIGHT SHIM!

I was contemplating that myself... I also have made .002" and .003" shim. I don't think Ill use the .005" shims. and I want to raise the level of the shim so they are .006" on the Intake and .008" on the exhaust side. I am constantly lapping and putting my valve springs back in to check. its taking to long like a hour each valve. I started lapping them with a drill and some hose I had laying around to make it go quicker but its still allot of work. All because my valves were a tad too short.

Do they sell thicker shims? are there different model Toyotas that I can take shims off of?

The dealer sells shims, you measure the clearance, use a chart to look up the shim needed, then order it from Toyota. It's in the BGB manuals. Hell, here's the chart.

I found out that the 1zz and 2zz corolla motors have shim less buckets that are the same. I'm going to grab a few next time i'm at the junk yard.

ok but they may not be the right thicknesses, you should probably just buy the right buckets or shims and do it right once, would suck to eat a cam lobe or burn a valve from incorrect lash.

correct the 1ZZ uses shimless buckets. you need to measure the size you need and find the right bucket. it gets expensive. you are better off getting the right shim. follow the chart posted above and get the right shim.

yes there are several engines that use the same shims. 1MZ, 3MZ, 3S-GTE, 5S-FE, 7A-FE, 2JZ,GTE, 2JZ-GE, 5VZ-FE. they all use the same shims

Im just sticking with my shims and lapping the valves accordingly. I finally got the exhaust valves done last night now on to the intake valves.

i hope you are not using those shims you made. im not gonna tell you again, and dont come crying back here when you spit one out and break a valve
