Oxygen sensor check ? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #95896 12 posts Started by Liam_c
Hey everyone smile.gif

I went to go back my celica in the garage last night and as I walked behind the car I got a strong smell of petrol :s

My assumption is the O2 has gone bad (as my fuel consumption has gone up slightly) as well as idle is rough sometimes.

How can I easily (and cheaply) diagnos a faulty O2 sensor ? mines a 3sfe

Thanks smile.gif also no CEL has come up ... Yet lol
you sure you're not leaking fuel or fuel vapor somewhere?

The front O2 sensor that helps to regulate the air/fuel mixture won't throw a code unless it's completely dead. Something else that regulates the air/fuel mixture and won't throw a code unless it's dead is the coolant temperature sensor. Should be able to find testing procedures for both online.

Double check for fuel leaks as well. Other things that can cause running rich is a faulty fuel pressure regulator or leaking/sticking injectors. Won't hurt to try the reset procedure either.

Hmmm have reset the fuel air mix multple times - no difference....

Decided to use the ol' fashioned paper clip trip and do a fault test..

Came up with 2 flashes. Pause. 1 flash.

According to the fault code page its comes up as oxygen sensor frown.gif

So how many oxygen sensors are there? Is there just the one? *noob*
Code 21 is primary O2 sensor, so it's the one in the exhaust manifold or right below it. Which would explain the reduced economy.

Hmmm. The only issue i've just realised is the code i got was from http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=93774 and i've realised that its OBDI - But i may have OBDII? Does that affect anything?
Doing the flasher check gives OBDI codes. OBDII was a U.S. only thing, I know EOBD which was Europe's equivalent wasn't until 2001, I think it was about the same for JOBD which was Japan's. Being the SS-I it was never a U.S. market car.

Ah i see. Time to source me a new O2 sensor then... Goodbye 150 bucks mad.gif

Thanks Box smile.gif
Would give eBay and Amazon a look, or any wholesale auto parts place. Not sure if RockAuto would ship to you but I think I've heard of those in Europe ordering from them before. One would think it'd use the same sensor as the 5S-FE over here but would have to double check. Something you can try before replacing the sensor is to pull it out and blast it with intake cleaner and remove all of the build-op and then put it back in one dry.

Get a sensor with the whole wire and connector, not one you wire in.
