Timing problem (PLEASE HELP) - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #96076 5 posts Started by sdsendoh
So my friends recently helped replace the timing belt, oil seals, water pump on my 99 Celica GT with 5SFE motor.

We installed everything correctly including the timing. However we hand tightened the crank and brought it to a local shop to use their impact gun to shoot the bolt.

As soon as they shot the bolt with the gun, the timing went off since they didnt lock the crank. So we took everything apart and redid the timing, but now the car won't start even when timing is set correctly.

Since the 5sfe is non interference motor, I shouldn't have a bent value but what could be the cause?

Probably lined up the timing wrong, it's super easy because of how the engine is slanted on it. Just a couple teeth off and it won't start, or you're on the wrong mark, some cam sprockets have two holes.

yep redo the timing. or, check the crank position sensor. it wont run if thats not plugged in or broken

the thing is, the first 2 times we set the timing, we got it right off the bat...but as soon as the shop used the impact gun on the crank pulley this time, everything went out of wack.

Do you guys think anything messed up?

You don't have to go to a shop to hit the pully, if you can buy a chain wrench you will be able to tighten it enough buy hand with
a 1/2 inch breaker bar. Put a cloth around the pully( so the chain wont damage it) and give it a good tighten it will be good. Anyways like the op said just
start from scratch I don't like air guns a whole lot.
