New member- Engine Question - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #96198 6 posts Started by tattooz22
I am refurbishing my 1996 ST.
The motor is not on the list yet, because its still very strong, but will be soon (I'm at 206K miles now).

The questions:
In the interests of a little more speed do i try to swap in the 2.2? Does it fit?
Do i just go with an over size ring and piston kit and cough up the machining charge?

Additionally does anyone have a link for gear kits/sets for the 5 speed?

Thanks!

The questions:

Do i just go with an over size ring and piston kit and cough up the machining charge? >>You shouldn't have to touch the internals at all, just new gaskets and seals all around.>>

Additionally does anyone have a link for gear kits/sets for the 5 speed? >>We have very minimal aftermarket support, only gear sets are for the E153 / E154f, which is a close gear ratio set for racing. For the S54 tranmission, you can swap the 5th gear from an S51 and get better gas mileage on the highway: http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=92975>>

Thanks!

If you're not looking for more power, then just stick with the 7AFE is you want the gas mileage. As long as you keep up on maintenance and oil changes, you shouldn't have to worry about cracking the block open and replacing the internals.

Like Mike said, swapping a 2.2 really isn't worth it.
You'd need the motor, wiring, tranny, linkage, axles, ect.

For a little more from the 7afe 1.8 an intake and a header and a 2.25" or 2.5" exhaust would help make it feel faster.
For bigger gains upgraded camshafts would be fun (but cost around $500-$700) and that's only around 20 whp.

Again like Mike said, a lot of people swap to a 3sge, 3sgte, or a v6 (1mzfe or 3mzfe).
Search for some posts about everything and decide what's best for you and your goals.

4A-Gx swaps are more direct for the 7A,but you'll want a 6spd to match the higher revving narrower torque band of the 4A-Gx engines.

it would be alot of money and time to do a celica midway engine swap. Either do the simple bolt ons on your 7a or go straight to 3sge/3sgte.

if you are considering a swap, i suggest a V6. I have already done a V6 swap in an ST and it turned out awesome!
