When I shift into 3rd gear there's a noise that sounds like it's grinding. Also, I can put it into 3rd gear without using the clutch. This only happens with 3rd gear though. I've checked my transmission fluid and its good. Any idea what's wrong?

well, first of all, dont shift without clutch, it can be done with our cars, but, don't. it bad. and I think you might want to check your gearbox oil drained. they do it at places where you get your oilchanged, there are some little metal shavings that might be causing this, if I'm wrong, please someone correct me
good luck

ok... all I was saying, is try not to do it again. I've heard of doing that during a race, but its just not practical, to do it often.

does it sould like almost a whilsting noise? If so i had the same problem the gear look leaked from the car.
if it's a grinding noise... and it's there if you use the clutch or not... then you're syncro's are going out... probably due to you not using your clutch... my syncro's went out in my tranny and it had to be replaced....
toyota is known for having syncro's go out

what you did into 3rd is power shifting....theres a point of slip inbetween all gears and like you said if you apply slight pressure to the shift knob and that point comes around you can pull it out and throw it into next gear...my friend does it when he's racing....i still don't know how he gets into into the next gear with our grinding....but the only time he ever uses the clutch is in 1st and reverse h's been doin it for about two years now....i'm totally boggeled by the fact
