replacing my oil pan - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #97239 4 posts Started by celicaracer8o5
so last saturday i was changing my oil and found out that the last time my oil was changed the drain plug was cross threaded on the oil pan. so ive decided to just replace the whole thing. my question for you guys is, do i need to buy an oil pan gasket? i thought our cars didnt have one and had sealant instead. im online and see that they have gaskets for sale for our cars. should i buy a gasket?

edit: my motor is the 5sfe.

I have used the gasket on a couple of my old 6th gens and have used sealant on a couple as well. No issues with either from what I have experienced. There has been thread discussions about it before. Hopefully it helps a little.
I've done it both ways, and would go with FIPG next time - cork gaskets (what is available for this engine's pan) require very uniform tightening and WILL LEAK if not so. Ask me how I know. FIPG is a lot more forgiving and lasts longer.

Unlike in the past, manufacturers have stopped using cork gaskets on modern engines. There must've been a good reason for that.
Ive used both, but yes i gave in to FIPG now.
