Flywheel and Pulley - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #9748 37 posts Started by ST-204
it dosnt necisarily increase HP... it just frees up HP that is being "eaten up" in those places. The pulley's lighten the routantional mass of the pulley wheels, and the same with the flywheel.

More difference will probable be felt with a flywheeel, what a lightened flywheel will do is allow your engine to rev quicker allowing for quicker accleration.
I've heard some people have had problems with their a/c and power steering...just something to keep in mind.

Flywheel will make ur RPM's faster, cool.

do they make these pulley's for our st's? And Unorthadox are top notch pulley's
also wouldn't it help reduce the amount of stress put on the motor from higher revs and forced induction?

**Warning: Total Moron Question**

Are both the Flywheel and Pulley in an Automatic?

-Brian
the pulley yes, the flywheel unforntantly is not used in an automatic, well atleast the after market ones.
Does anyone have these on there cars??

Pulleys make waste of the stock harmonic balancer, which balances your gears together to make sure they don't damage the crank. The aftermarket gears can potentially do harm to your crank, and thus I would not recommend them to you, especially due to their limited power gains.

However, they do work on the same concept as lightening a flywheel. and that concept is lightening rotational mass. Any time you lighten rotational mass, or the mass of things that rotate (duh!), it does a LOT of good for you car. A flywheel that's 10 lbs lighter than your stock flywheel allows your revs to fall faster due to its lower inertia. The lightened rotational mass means less stress on your engine to get that flywheel moving, which means more power to the ground, faster. Note: not more power created, just more already available power transferred more efficiently.

Lightening wheels will make the same type of effect. You will get better gas mileage due to less work needed to turn the wheels around, your car will be faster than if you were to take of the same weight in frictional mass (like removing your AC or jack), you benefit in handling, and you benefit in braking.

Cliff notes: Lightening rotational mass = GOOD!
Ridding yourself of harmonic balancer = BAD!

I agree an underdrive pulley could theoretically be a problem. but a lot of people on this site, including myself, have the ur or asp pulley with no problems.
So u guys think the flywheel of Unorthadox is a good deal for our car, it costs about $400+ .
Honestly, in our cars...it won't be a problem. With such low power in the first place, the crankshaft should hold up. Also, the problem with our engines is in the top end not the bottom end. Our bottom ends are very strong and rigid...it's the top ends and sometimes the blocks that go in our engines...at least from my experience as well as from stories on the site.

I guess though, it wouldn't necessarily be worth the money to buy an underdrive pulley considering how much power you will actually restore...but I guess the same would go for an intake and exhaust on our cars. It's all about freeing up lost power, and every little bit helps.

The flywheel, however, is an awesome modification for our cars especially as you add more and more aftermarket parts. As you increase power, you still are only getting a fraction of the potential power to the ground because you are on stock drivetrain components...but as soon as you upgrade your drivetrain then you will begin to realize how much gain you are actually getting out of those mods you've spent so much money on. Honestly, the best modfication I have done to my car is my custom torque converter followed by the S-AFC. I guess the best reason why is that you get immediate satisfaction out of drivetrain upgrades because the effect is very noticeable.

Sorry I'm rambling, but I just got back from a SoCo party.

I personally say the UD pulley is a very nice mod to do. IMO, it's a lot better than things like short ram intakes, and exhausts. The lighter rotational mass will also let the engine rev slightly faster, and more freely. it's worth every penny, IMO.

i would probably not choose the UD flywheel as my first choice on flywheels. look around at the other flywheels offered, there are alot!
thanks for the links and info. I perosnally wouldn't risk damaging my crank, even if it supposedly wouldn't do it harm, just because the gains are so minimal. But, at least now I'm smarter!

well as flywheels go I wouldnt go for UD but for pulley's I would....
So except UD's pulley, what u guys recommend??
By the way, in the flywheel, UD and Fidanza, which one is better??
In price, Fidanza is cheaper than former a little bit!!
Fidanza makes a better flywheel, or so i've heard.

I just got a Zex Flywheel put in my GT and yeh you can tell the differance immediatly. its just like BOOM I had to change my whole timing pattern for my shifting. I like it alot better now.
