20V 4A-GE Swap Done! - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #10222 71 posts Started by Coomer
Today, after six months and four days of waiting, my car is finally finished! >biggrin.gif>

My mechanic swapped the AE101 4A-GE into the car, and it is awesome! Though I can't go fast in it yet due to having to break in the clutch, I can tell that it's going to be sweet once the clutch is broken in. >smile.gif>

The motor itself sounds amazing. It sounds so so sweet, and will only sound better once I'm able to run the car at full throttle. >smile.gif> I'm running just a generic filter on the end of the AFM, and for exhaust, I'm using the factory 4-2-1 header, with 2.5" crush-bent piping and no cat, and a OBX universal muffler.

As for drivability, it's very good. The light JUN flywheel took some getting used to, as you have to rev the car higher when starting from a stop, but once I got the hang of it, everything is nice. The Clutch Masters stage one clutch kit is excellent, and feels great and is not to aggressive for a street, daily-driven setup. What is really nice is how little the engine changes momentum. This is due to a solid front motor mount which hardly allows the engine to move at all. >smile.gif> I no longer have A/C or cruise control unfortunately though.

I have a couple hundred more miles to drive to break in the clutch, and then once that's done, I'll let you guys know how the power is. >smile.gif>

Tomorrow(Today, technically) I'll take some pictures and post them up here. >smile.gif>

New Toyota project coming soon...

Man, you should be able to break in that clutch in half a day! Drop everything you're doing and go drive EVERYWHERE you can think of!! Its worth the wait. Glad you finally got it running. If you want some ideas for intake/exhaust shoot me an email. I have lots. >smile.gif>
that's great man! we are all happy that yelli celi is back on the road again! >biggrin.gif> >biggrin.gif>

cruise controls is useless, and you have tons of A/C... throw down the windows >biggrin.gif> awesome to hear that your car finally got done man... cant wait to see the pictures... are they giving you any compensation for the damage done to your car?
AC lines probably didnt line up, or the 7a compressor wouldnt bolt up.

he can get it to work if he really wants, it will just take some more time and money

congrats coomer, have fun with the car.

Way to go. Can't wait to see some pics. First thing I'd do is take it to the dealer and ask them to diagnose an idle problem or something, then wait for the techs to lift the hood and smile.
coomer - if your 4age didn't come with a/c and you had it on your 7a-fe (and you have the compressor over here in b'ham).... i DO have a 4a-ge idler pulley w/ a/c bracket mount..... we could potentially mount it up and see if it will work or not....

i'm not 100% sure where it is on the 7a-fe, but on the 4a-ge it goes below the PS pump (which, on the 4a-ge is on exhaust side... not intake side)

btw.... once the clutch is broken in we'll have to go down chuckanut dr.... i'll go slow for you the first time so you can keep up >tongue.gif>
congrats coomer. get us some video of that beast asap. >biggrin.gif>
Congrats, now put ur name on that swapped list!

I dont have a/c or cruise either. I justify this with the fact that if you have an engine swap, why are you using cruise control! And a/c sucks power, so you dont need that either.

Congrats Coomer. You deserve it. Should be a ton of fun... now... get it tuned up a bit... and get me some REAL 4AG 20V numbers (dyno run of pump-fuel /w octane boost, 1/4 runs... all of it!!!)... ;] I've personally driven a Blacktop 4AG powered AE86 and those little engines SCREAM. The individual throttle bodies sound sooooo sweet.... it's indescribable. Awesome work dude... and if you need help with a/c components... I too have FWD brackets and A/C pump...

I'm addicted to VVT! >biggrin.gif>

I just got back from driving the car, and now that the clutch is broken in, I was able to get on it, and oh man, this engine really pulls compared to the stock 7A-FE. >biggrin.gif> It's pretty tame below four grand, but once you hit about 4,000 RPM it's crazy! Not only do you hear a sound that's insanely sweet, but it puts you back into your seat with the power! >smile.gif>

Hopefully soon I'll dyno the car and run it in the 1/4 mile and see what kind of times I can pull off. I might just be hyped up, but the car feels like it could make a pass in the high 15s. >smile.gif>

Anyway, here are some pics.

Check out that header. >smile.gif> When I was at the gas station earlier today checking the oil, a couple guys asked me if it was DC Sports or what. When I told them it was stock, they looked pretty surprised.

Here's my new exhaust tip. I'm running the car without a cat for now, and it's crazy loud. I'm pretty sure that I'll get pulled over for it unless I do something about it. >wink.gif>

I know, I know, I need to paint the engine bay really badly. Over spring break I'm going to tidy up the wiring and paint some stuff and clean some stuff. >smile.gif>
