No power steering = full control - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #30028 36 posts Started by soulshadow
Ok, with my 4age swap I haven't been driving with any power steering for the last couple weeks. My celica feels totally different and turning when the wheels aren't rotating is a pain in da ass. Anyways, I noticed a big difference in control when I take the corners around my place. (i live out in the countryside). It feels much more like your in control. Overall, Power steering has its pros and cons. It does give more total control, but at the same time a full revolution of the steering wheel is a major drag. For now, i'll be the only one on 6G without any power steering in my celica. My tendons are pumped now! >tongue.gif>
there are a few people on here that dont have theirs. i would never loose mine.
i think you might have more of a feel of the road while driving, but it should really make your handling any different

I dont have PS either, I love it.

I will return one day.
I cant stand driving cars without it.
ps helps absorb some of the shock on the road.

I would never want to drive a car without powersteering. Parallel parking is as hard enough as it is.

When I used to have P/S with my 7afe it felt like I was sliding most of the time when I went through corners. Now it feels like Im in control!
ok from my understanding, if ur car has power steering and u shut the car off while ur rolling its HARD AS HELL to steer...but if u remove the system its easier to steer without p/s?
my friend and i actualyl have a name for driving without power steering

we go to the top of a hill with winding roads to the bottom... get it rolling down, take it out of gear, turn off the motor and then turn the key to the on position

then we drive around at 2 in the morning with no lights and confuse the **** out of the people that cant see or hear us but know that we are driving by... its pretty stealthy

but i have noticed that without the power steering the car handles a lot differently, there is a lot more feedback in the wheel but you need a little more power for it... its cool to drive without power steering when you are screwing around on the back roads somewhere up in the mountains but as soon as i hit traffic in san diego or try to drive at 10 mph in a parking lot im sure glad i have my powersteering
Most race cars don't have power steering... and like you said its a great thing... you do feel the road so much better.. but parking is a bitch .. but do you drive more or park more?

A true manual rack is different from a power steering rack that isn't working... As far as I know... I think ALL 6th gen celicas had power steering standard... I don't like broken power steering racks... I do however love a true manual steering rack.

oh its just you, dont you know everybody does it? its incredibly safe we do it all the time especially after it snows and the roads are slick, no worries. i hope you know one of these days dlx, its ging to be a cop car you confuse, and they aren't to happy when they get confused >smile.gif>.

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.

Yah I love the top of the hill and the down hill driving part too! Deff. turn off the engine and make sure that your brakes don't work anymore too! ITs so awesome as you scream your AS off going down the hill and into the tree or off the road and fly sky high!! Its so COOL! tongue.gif
Don't do that again...

Turn the wheel hard enough it will lock and the brakes won't work..

GL killing yourself next time though!
wow, i hope he was just kidding cause thats a great way to kill youself.

so if you have a nomal p/s celica and remove the pump it will drive like a celica with a broken p/s rack or like a manual built p/s car?

People can make claims all they want... but a broken PS rack does NOT feel like a manual rack. A broken PS rack is stiff and feels like... *GONG* ... a broken PS rack.

So, how would you go about converting? I've noticed the Celica's steering to be a little uninformative. There's not too much chance I'll switch to manual, but I'd still like to know how to do it. You're going to tell me it's not possable without a custom box since there aren't any Celica's without PS, aren't you?

Yes I am unfortunately. Unless there is a stripped down version overseas somewhere that came with a LHD manual MacPhearson rack... then it's probably gonna end up custom fabbed DYI. It can be done though... might be able to use... say an MR2's rack with custom ties or something...

Not worth the effort, in other words then. At least not in my book. Not yet.

I used to hate driving in a parking lot with my 85' civic with no power steering but when I got the celica I began to miss the lack of powersteering. Also when I used to drive up my street in this civic I would just coast with the engine off for like a minute and then just glide and park in front of my house, kind of dumb but it was cool driving a car with no sound! tongue.gif
I used to have no power steering in my '89 CRX, it was uncomfortable at first but you get used to it and it does feel like you have a lot of control compared to cars with ps.

Anyways... Can't you just drain the ps fluid or something?

CORRECT! Cant just drain the fluid... or bypass the pump...well you can, but thats retarded and its not the same as a true manual rack.
you'd need to remove the pump entirely and cap off all the lines you can't just drain the fluid...

What more would this do over just draining the fluid or pulling the powersteering fuse? It's still going to be a powersteering set up that's just not working.

Well, you would burn out the pump.

Kwanza is right, there's a huge difference between a manual rack and a non-functional power steering rack. HUGE difference. The manual racks aren't hard to turn at all, they're very nice. Drive an MR2 sometime and you'll know what I mean.

I'll bet that the rack from a Corolla could be fabbed up without too much trouble.
