Radiator Fans stuck on - 6G Celicas Forums

Erik sent me a link about how to correct the fans running constantly after removing AC.

The way one guy fixed it was jumping two pins on this plug below

This was on a 5th gen. I was wondering if any of you 6th gen guys not running AC has the fans running full time. I just tryed jumping the plug but the fans still continued running.

So, anyone else that could try to jump this plug and post the results that would be a great help.

i dont see how AC would make a difference or not.

there is a temp sensor on the passengers side of the radiator. you have to plug the 3s harness into it. if the sensor dosnt get pluged in, or is missing, the fans will stay on all the time, as a safetly feature. maybe the ST raditor dosnt have the sensor and thats why your fans are staying on?

If DG did your harness your fans will stay on all the time, he wires them that way on purpose, I believe that is what he told me. Mine stay on all the time too.
lagos is correct, the ST radiator does not have the sensor, therefore your fans will run all the time.
yap exactly how mine is...it starts running at normal op temp and never stops...lol tho i dont see this being a problem tho, atleast we wont overheat hahah

Well now. This means we should figure out how to get it working properly, I do not like that fans on all the time.

How would I wire this up to run properly ? DG I'm going to pm you.

us ST guys are probably just going to have to swap to a GT radiator which has the sensor lagos is talking about (i think?). or even better...maybe a koyo one hMmMmM

mine actually come on as soon as i turn the key to on, but i think that has something to do with my fan relay wire leading to nowhere..

im going to replace the radiator down the road with a GT one, simply because i dont like having to union the two lower radiator hoses together, but mark said even in his car with the koyo his fans were on all the time.

but jeff if you figure it out with the ST radiator let me know!
The fan temp wire comes from plug EA1 if i remember correctly. I will have to look it up for sure but i think it is a light green color wire. I think it might have a black stripe on it too?

The absence of a looped circuit does make a difference. It is not just the temp sensor it is several sensors that if not working or disconnected the fans will run. When I removed my a/c, my fans stayed on, so a/c most definately makes a difference.

i dont find it to be that big of a deal, but it is a constant reminder that we have done non oem work to our car and to me thats annoying smile.gif

but like i said im a perfectionist, and i have a soft spot for oem quality things, which is why im going crazy trying to get my engine bay looking good.
Ok well I just jumped mine and it DID fix the fan problem. So basically it depends on which one of ur plugs/sensors isnt connected thats causing it.

So if you have fans constantly on after u remove your a/c - jump the grey plug that looks like above by the firewall. Jeff I'd leave it jumped because if your messing with something you wont know its fixed unless thats jumped.

i just looked at my plug today. its a 2 wire plug with white and blue (with black stripe?) wires on it. it is located on the bottom of the radiator on the passengers side. if u dont have that pluged in, or dont have the sensor on your radiator, then the fans will stay on all the time.


i think in order to have eriks fix work, you also have to have a GT radiator with a temp sensor on there.

sounds right to me lagos, unless of course like my wiring your fan relay leads no where smile.gif ill have to figure that out whenever i get a GT radiator!
Well I diagree with Art. There are several plugs in which the fan power runs through in order to create a closed loop. If any one of those plugs or sensors is malfunctioning/disconnected then the fans stay on. As it happens the plug in MY problem was the a/c. This doesnt mean its NOT that problem but could be a couple. If Jeff fixes his issue w/o jumping that plug then that would mean its a GT - only problem. As of right now I'm not so convinced the wiring is that different between trims.

lets put it this way erik, my car is an ST and my engine harness is a GT harness mated with a 3sgte harness, the only two plugs on the harness not in use are cruise control and coolant temp.
So what your saying is that your car doesnt know how hot your coolant is?

Thats a bad thing.

the coolant temp sensor on the radiator is for deciding when to turn on the radiator fans, the coolant temp sensor on the thermostat is a diff sensor.

there are 3 coolant temp sensors on the car.

one for your gauge
one for your ecu
one for the radiator fans

I didn't join 2 radiator hoses together for mine, i did at first but it poped off and I lost all my coolent and got stranded. After that I went to autozone and found a radiator hose from another car that fit perfect but I don't know what kind of car it was from.
i dont think mine will pop off, the clamps i used to clamp it down are tough ****.. haha
I'll have to look into this a little more. I'll jump the first plug by the fire wall again. The funny thing is I dont have any other plugs except the AC pump plug.

Now that I type this I remember a loose plug in front besides the AC plug.

Could you guys give me a wire color break down on the rad temp sensor plug ?

i would if i was home but im back at school.



theres two groups of wires over on the passenger side of the engine bay though IIRC. one coming from the relay box, one in that loom from over the block , to the alternator, a/c, etc.

im pretty sure its gonna be coming out of that relay box, but its definitly on the passenger side of the engine bay.

Erik, did you completely remove your AC ? Do you still have the pump plugged in ?

In theory, if I jump both these plugs the fans should work properly.

no, if you jump the radiator temp sensor, the fan will never come on . you need a raditor with a temp sensor. if that dont fix it, you need to jump the wire erik posted.

it depends on what kind of signal the ecu is expecting from the radiator temp sensor

that sensor tells the ecu when the radiator is hot enough to warrant fans, if you jump it the fans will stay off.


this begs the question as to how the 7afe ecu knows when to turn the fans on without this sensor.

u need the temp sensor. trust me.
