Nicely done. You are doing front and rear extensions along with sideskirts, right? Or just sideskirts?

Yep, front and rear extensions and sideskirts. I was trying to fit my rear extensions on today but they're such poor quality that they look horrible. frown.gif I have a lot of work to get them to fit.

New Toyota project coming soon...
Yeah mine are not great either so I've decided to mold them.

But - I hate bodywork so I'm not doing it, when I get my car painted it will all be done.

Thats strange, mine fit nearly perfectly.

QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.
>>Day Five>>

Today was a long day. I started by sanding the sideskirts, cleaning and sanding extensions and the spoiler and the front bumper, and then disassembling the mirrors and cleaning and sanding those. I also worked with the rear extensions and managed to get them to fit somewhat decently.

The most time consuming part of the day however was building a home-made paint booth in my garage. First I cleared out an area.

Attached Image

Then my mom and dad and I put down plastic for the floor and ceiling and north and south walls.

Attached Image

Then we put in the east wall and the filter.

Attached Image

Then we put a fan in, which sucks air out of the booth.

Attached Image

Then finally we put in the west wall and I made a door and finished sealing it off.

The idea is to get the overspray to flow upwards and out of the paint booth so it doesn't fall on the paint. I tested out the booth a few minutes ago though, and it just sucked the plastic walls in. I need to put weights on the floor on the outside to hold that down and probably put a fan blowing air in behind the filter. I'm going to do that tomorrow though, since I'm crazy tired.

nice work chris, your definetly gonna want to get some form of filtered air in as well.
cant wait to see your results man!

nice. looks like professional work. keep it up. i already know your car will turn out even more awesome than it already is.

ss-iii splitters and 404 skirts areon. which means i need to update my sig.
>>Day Six>>

Today I got the paint booth to work reasonably well by setting up another fan behind the filter.

I then laid out parts and cleaned them again.

Attached Image

Then I painted. This is where it got bad. The gun I was using sucked and everything has tons of orange peel, and the rear bumper will have to be repainted because the gun malfunctioned and shot globs of paint everywhere. frown.gif

Below you can see the orange peel detail.

I'm going to send you some parts ok?

Looks good. Gotta have patience for this type work.

Coomer what gun are u using for your spraying and what kind of Air compressor do you use to powe ryour spray gun.
if u got that much orange peel it was probably becaues you didnt spray the coats wet enough. and the spatter coming from the gun is either because it wasn't clean, the gun wasnt working right or the paint was too thick in parts

Coming in 2010full paintjob - new wheels - modified body - new interior - engine build- marriage
Coomer you are doing an amazing job! Keep it up man
Check what Air pressure your Paint gun requers - is it low pressure gun or high press. I would suggest you getting some Low pressure gun (bout 1.5-2bar) and not a big one, they are easy to work with, do not requer big air compressor.

You got orange peal just cuz your air pressure was too low for your paint or gun, or either your paint was not so liquid.

Ussualy take a sample metal sheet - and before painting test everything out on it.

Hey Coomer,

keep at it man! That yellow fender is really bright. Reminds me of Lissa's new toy smile.gif .

i finally got going with my bodywork too. Slow and steady wins the race, eh? Started sanding the engine bonnet-- big job, many surprises!! Right now i'm fighting with the adhesive residue on the sideskirts. RockGuard panels peeled right off but left a real sticky mess behind. Tired everything i had in the house. Rust remover + rubbing compound + elbow grease works best but is slow.

The spray booth rocks. We are going right to the garage walls with the plastic and venting to the outside through a couple of furnace filters. Hope to paint this weekend.

Anyway it's still raining here so i guess i'll work on the skirts some more.

Hey Chris nice project. Long time no type. I'm glad to see your keeping the car. It was always inspiration for me to DIY on mine. The STi project is coming along nice. I'll have to send you a few links to check out.

Are those the power-fold mirrors? I never got to see an end result with those. I'll check back and read up the project thread. Your making me wish I still had my Celica. tongue.gif
Great work Coomer, I'm following this closely because my car also needs to be painted.....very badly. This is inspiration and education for me to take on the job myself, and take my time to make it look as good as possible.

Can't wait to see the end result, its going to look excellent. thumbsup.gif

Any updates yet Chris, or have you been busy lately? I've had the habit for the past week of checking the exterior forum to see if anythings changed, looking foward to seeing more. smile.gif

Awesome man, I'll be shortly starting my own bodywork project, though of a quite smaller scale...hatch and doors, but I'll take notes of your work , thank you for all the info!

I'm a bit discouraged. I sanded everything down that I painted and re-sprayed some parts with a better gun and compressor, but still came out with lots of orange peel.

And on the parts I tried sanding with high-grit sandpaper(800, 1000, 1500, 2000,) I couldn't buff them to look ok for the life of me. I tried three different rubbing compounds and three different polishes both by hand and machine and my paint looked like it had really, really bad swirl marks no matter what I did. I'm wondering if a bodyshop could buff the car for me once I've got it all sanded down.

New Toyota project coming soon...
hang in there buddy.

i started my project http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=38095&st=0 almost a month ago and thought i'd be done by father's day at the very latest. it is slow going and, like you, things aren't going as smooth as planned. seems orangepeel is a viscosity issue. make certain you spray thin even coats, your reducer is not flashing off too quickly, is well mixed and humidity is below 85%. these are the only constants i could find when looking up the problem on the web.

>>Day Seven>>

Today consisted of sanding everything down completely in preparation for more paint, that hopefully goes on correctly this time. kindasad.gif

The sanded part pictures are at home on the other camera, but I'll show you the aftermath on my body at the end of the day. I told my mom to rub sunscreen on my back this morning, but she failed to get my spine area, so now I have a nice painful Christmas-tree shaped sunburn on my back.

OUCH! kindasad.gif Try to get some aloe on there Chris! Your doing a great job though!! Keep it up man...no matter how painful it may be. smile.gif
instead of aloe, try hanging a few lights and some garland-- no one will notice laugh.gif Christmas in July, yeah!!!

when i saw the pic i thought of a camping so long ago...we were canoeing down the Miramichi River and we were all too MALE to ask each other to apply lotion on our backs. did our GFs laugh at us when we emerged from the wilderness on Sunday? YES!! 8 guys with matching sunburns...how odd.

hope you get to work on the car this weekend. are you taking Monday off to stretch it into a long Fourth of July weekend? i will be spending a lot of time this Canada Day weekend working on my Celi. hope to fnish masking today and get to the task of painting finally.

the yeloceli is so sharp looking! best of success.

Chris - about orange peel - either you are using too thick paint and you need to ad some dissolvent to them - or your pressure on your compressor is too low. These are 2 main issues.

About swirl marks, are ya using Clear coat? Or you get swirl marks on your Acril paint? If the swirl marks are Under clearcoat - you aint sanded primer good. As for referance - once you primer your parts - take a ratle can (pref Black) spray really really thin coat of the back paint over your primer (i ussualy dont even cover the surface, just cover it with some small spots of the paint) and then start sanding - you will see all the inperfections on your surface cuz they all be black, this way you will determinate where and how much you need to sand and if you need another coat of primer or not.

>>Day Eight>>

Today was a good day...I finally got the paint to apply correctly, and it looks great so far on the parts I've painted. biggrin.gif I sanded down the underside of my trunk lid so that I could test the paint on that.

Attached Image

I then cleaned it off and painted it, and it turned out well.

Attached Image

So I went ahead and painted the rear bumper, rear extensions, and fuel door, and all of them turned out good as well. biggrin.gif I'm so happy that I finally got my painted parts looking good. Tomorrow I'm hoping to get a lot more parts that are off the car painted. smile.gif

What did you do to get the paint to work out? I think it looks fantastic.
