Broke whille racing again - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #41271 41 posts Started by Bigmeanbulldog55
I was racing a Z24 Cavy with a 50 shot and when I went to go from 3rd to 2nd insted of 4th gear. I was a good 2 car lengths ahead at the time though. The only reason I win races against most guys is because of my launches and fast shifts. But when I missed the shift, the motor went haywire. The rev limiter did not kick in at all. I have no idea how high it rev'd, but it was past the 8k mark. But now, the flywheel is litterally in pieces. Which is really a rare thing to happen. The clutch is obviously gone too. And I may have bent the crank. So, I might be in the market for a 3sgte, 3sge, 1mzfe, 3mzfe, or 4age. We'll see what happens. I hate to waste this opertunity and put another 5sfe in there. It all just depends on what I can find and for what price. I'm really upset to see my baby down though.

uh ohhhh! sounds like trouble... in more ways than 1.
But u better verify that this wasn't street-racing, before ur topic gets locked....we've seen alot of that recently. And good luck w/ finding your next motor smile.gif
lol...this is a funny post.

I guess part of me would say go ahead and upgrade...might as well with the opportunity.

Then another part of me says, please dont upgrade, dont go wasting any more motors or engines. Get a cheap 5sfe and throw it in there if your just going to be racing your friends and what not.

That's what you get.

Yeah, I know. I'm really kicking myself over it.

And btw, this was on the drag strip in Fairmount WV. Not on a street.

I guess my response to that would be that if you upgraded, then you wouldnt have to worry about quick shifts and starts, because you would be fast enough to be able to kinda take it easy on the shifting, which would mean your less likely to repeat that last mistake. Trying to be optimistic here. I say live it up, if you wanna race, then by all means go for it, im sure its a great thrill. If this wasnt my daily driver id be doing the same thing. I say go for more power...and just be more careful with shifting?

I take it to the strip or the autox track almost every weekend. And I do a lot of street racing. But this story luckly happend on the track, or my parents would have killed me.

It is my dd, but I'm an idiot sometimes. About the driving, that's what was really funny about all this. I'm kind of known for being a good driver around here. And the fact that I did that has gotten me some real crap from my local buddies. But, I do have to shift really fast to run with the guys I do. I prove that the little 5s actually has some real power every weekend. Best wins are a sr20det 240, and a z24 Cavy with a 50 shot of nitro.

u beat a sr20...i can't believe that. maybe he did what you did. or something was wrong. or on a curvy aRse road that you know by heart and take at 90.
Your flywheel exploded? Usually when I see that I see pieces of the flywheel thrown through the body of the car (and sometimes the driver.) Was this a lightweight (or lightened) flywheel?

New Toyota project coming soon...

I figured someone was going to say that. It was in the 1/8 mile, and like I said, I'm known for being a good driver. Get the hole shot and they can't stop you. If I was in his car, I would have won with it. He didn't miss anything, he just didn't know how to get it to hook up right.

It was a lightweight one. It broke all the bolts off from the crank to it. I guess I'm lucky it didn't do more than it did. I'll take pictures of it if anyone wants to see them. We took the starter off and reached into there and you could tell the flywheel was just in pieces. Then we took it apart and it was all the more obvious.

damn man, i loved how you were always on this quest to try and make the 5S as fast as humanly possible. Might be time for a high reving NA. Thats your style.

I'm thinking about a 3sge 3rd gen. Or a 1mzfe motor. I like the NA power. My dad and I were talking about putting a turbo on my 5s, so if I get the 1mzfe, we'll just continue that. I'd like to have that monster motor in my car. That would be the first forced induction V6 6gen. Oh, btw, the 5sfe is a great motor. Too run up to 8k+ and not destroy more than it did, and on 155k miles, that is a good motor. I think it has some real potential for boosting. Anything that strong can hold some real psi. I'm just thinking out loud now, I don't knwo what going to happen with all this. We'll see. I'll dissapoint everyone as soon as possible with the news that the 5sfe has to be rebuilt. lol, I'll be driving a 91 Geo Metro fxi till it's back on the road. So no more drag racing for me.

EDIT: With the turbo 1mzfe, I would most likely be the fastest fwd in town. I think I could handle that. I would have to limit myself to role races only though. But that's all these guys like to do anyway.

the 4 banger metro can hit 130whp pretty easily, coupled with its almost nothing weight, it'll scoot suprisingly fast.

Yeah, but that's the g13b. And even with that hp, those things have a hard time getting as fast as 14's in the quarter. I can't really figure it out. I just have the G10 sohc motor. That's the 3 banger. They make a nice turbo kit for it, but I'm just not sure about tweeking with it. It would be a nice car for tite courses, but it would never have the top end or interstate speed that I feel I need now.

i would like to see some pics of that flywheel. the aftermarket wheels have sfi ratings that have RPM ranges there safe to. what brand was it?

Oh... nevermind my comment then. I always wondered what would happen is you misshifted like that... now I know. Hope you get your car up and running soon with a new heart. smile.gif

A 240 is rwd, I doubt you got the hole shot on him. Maybe he didn't have the swap.

daaaayuuuum kid, if you got that much wik3d driving skill youd be beatin' skylines... craaazy skillllz

oh, and some upgraded latitudinal engine mounts. seeing as how the side mounts do nothing unless it's a longitudinally mounted engine. n00b.

that should help your uber-l33t misshifting driving skillzzZz

Are you making fun of me? You've always been cool to me, so I'm hoping that I'm missunderstanding what you've said here. The side mounts are the ones behind the radiator and next to the shift lever. That's how they list them at the auto parts stores. They don't do much for something like drag, but they just make the car a little more responsive on tite courses.

I honestly can't remember. It was aftermarket when I got it, and then I lightend it up. Could have just been too much wieght cut off it or something

He is a buddy of mine, and it is swapped, I've seen the motor with my own eyes. If your going to say crap like that, stay out of my thread. I'm not new to driving or racing my car. Just because I don't post about it all the time, doesn't mean I don't knwo what I'm talking about. A fwd with good tires and a good driver can get the hole shot on a rwd with worse tires and not as good a driver. Next time I take the car down to Fairmount to run on the 1/8, I'll take a pick of my slip before I throw it away to show you my almost flat 2 sec 60 foot time. Don't be a douche.

My previous record says I had the good shifting skills, but it has beeb tarnished. It was a really big race for me, and I was pretty nervous. I think that's why I missed. I keep replaying it over and over trying to figure out how I did it wrong. Honestly, I can never remember hitting the wrong gear like that since I started driving standards when I was 12 driving the farm truck around. But those are a lot of years to possibly forget things. I don't know anything about the 7afte's. The 5sfe just had so much torque that you could fly right off the line. People usually caught me at the end, but that's how I expected it to happen. I want to get this V6 turbo project of mine going so I can run with the big boys. There is a 425hp Civic in town, I know everyone has one in their town too, and I told him I was coming for him next summer. I don't think I could get the hp right off, but I'm still going after him. If I have my way, my car is going to be completely crap to drive. I know that, but for some reason I just can't bring myself to say "stop."

EDIT: I run low to mid 9s in the 1/8. My best was a 9.205. I had to go get the slip from the glove box. It'll be there till I get a better one.

I grew up with the old cars. Dad always called it Nitro, or Nitrous. So that's just what I picked up. It was a while before I started calling intercoolers intercoolers instead of aftercoolers. He talks desiel alot too. NOS is a brand name anyway. The propper name is Nitrous Oxide I guess. No one ever adds the Oxide part hardly.

"get an economy engine if you want to race and a performance engine if you just want something to look at"
that makes sense..... tongue.gif

anyway, that sucks about your car dude, I hope you get a better engine in there. I'd like to see the HP numbers of a turbo V6

I've gotten so excited about my ideas with the 5sfe that I came up with last night. I almost just want to keep it and tweak with it instead of upgrading to a "real" motor. From everything I've ever heard on this site, that is stupid. But dang it, my results thus far have proved that this motor is not crap. And more tweaking can definately get it to a point that it will be one heck of a car to drive. Even if it's not the fastest car in town, it'll still be cool. lol, a NA 5sfe motor that will be cool. I'm probably standing completely alone when saying that.
