Best Tire - 6G Celicas Forums

A local shop is having a sale on rubbers. Which of these would be the best/stickiest tire.
Probably going with 225/45/17


Choices are:

Kumho Escta 711, 712, SPT, MX (summers)
Escta ASX, AST (HP all seasons)

Anyone have any personal experience?

im using the ASX in the same size as that. they grip pretty good for a cheap tire.

i had the 711s before, but they wore out really fast, and had poor traction.

I was looking at either the AST or the MX. They ranked pretty good on tirerack and tire1010.

Art, what type of weather do you drive in? What do you think of the sidewalls? Do they have a lot of flex? Hows the treadwear on them?

From that list the Kumho MX will be the stickiest. Expect 20,000km from them smile.gif

They arent my first choice either, but they are on for a decent price ($100/tire) and I need some to pass my inspection. I'll probably upgrade to some decent goodrich/michellins later on.

Michelin pilot sport on all corners, you cant go wrong.

I have pilot sports on all 4 on the benz...

Not bad, but they really don't like the cold...need to be warm to do their magic....

Thinking for my next set to try pilot sport cups...stock M3 CSL rubber

P-sports can't get you wrong but you'll pay some $ for them
ps- CSL is freakin HAWT (my friend has full CSL interior)

but no khumo isn't decent they are by FAR the worst tires i've ever been on
my Nankangs stick better then Khumos

thanks for the words of wisdom.
they are a good tire in their price range. there are lots of better tires that people can go with, but they will end up costing you 2x and much. out of the budget brands, kumho performs well.

Toyo Proxes T1-R tires here. Why cheap out on the 1 thing that keeps you in contact with the road?? If you can affort to swap to a 3S with more power you also need a good set of tyres in the balance.

Driven with the Toyo's for about 11000 km's (of which 7000 with the GTE), about 30-40% tyre wear. Superb traction on dry, ok/good traction in the wet (just balance your foot). Cornering is just amazing with these.

I know they arent the best tire to get, and like I said, I will upgrade later on, but for now I need some new rubber to pass my inspection. As I previously stated they are the best bang for the buck ATM. At $100CAD a tire this is the best local deal I have found. Otherwise, the same price range would get me the wallmart special, and IMO kumho is better than the "wallmart special"


I did not swap the 3's myself. I bought the car with it installed. I'm tight on cash ATM, but NEED some tire to pass my inspection. If I had the cash I would go and get $400/tire rubber, BUT because I DONT have that kind of money laying around I want to get something cheap to hold me until I have some more $$.

are yall talking for high preformace kuhmos but i have 0 troubles out of my touring tires. no issues at all.

most of those tires have a really low tread ware. the dunlops are only 280!
kumho asx have a 420 tread ware (i think). so they will last you a bit longer then some of these other brands. not to mention that all the tires player posted are USED. i dont know a bout you, but when i buy tires i want them to be BRAND NEW.

well he said he only wanted them to pass inspection then upgrade later sooooo

beggers can't be chosers, if all i wanted was a set to pass insp. and then spend the $ to get some real tires...id go with something that would work and not cost much....

but the point was to look on ebay for other then khumo u can find them NEW for really cheap
i just got 2 brand new tires shipped for like ~120ish

Toyo tires ( proxy 4, proxy fz-4, T1R etc.) I work for tire company and I'll tell you. Toyo is the super tire for a price. I got FZ-4's and I love those. For front tires they did not use any balancing weights. They balanced zero. Just perfect. First time I got no vibration at all. Handling is great and they look awesome. Well that's for a street. If you want autocross go with falkens azenis( 200 TW, AA,A). Just the best tire so far. Road racing, Toyo RA1, Khumos V710 etc. If you buying tires just for a street use, try to look for little symbol on the side wall. It is a "E" in a circle. That means, tire was tested in Europe( autobahn..) in high speeds and as you know Europe has much better safety standarts than US. Same thing for a cars... That's how it is. Hope I helped a little

Kumho's are cheap grippy tires. The MX are a great bang for your buck set. Used a set of Kumho SPT for my first season of autocross, worked great. Played with tire pressure alot. When heated they stick very well.

word. i got my 16" ventus v4 es for $300 on the whole set mounted and balanced. they're really good for what i paid, but like any other tire, they need to warm up a bit to show you what they can really do.

I put hankook ventus k104 on the vr4 (After getting a quote for 1200usd for tires from other places... ) i ordered the set online and got them to my door shipped and installed for 540 usd ...

I even autoxed them.

They're not a bad tire... 'budget performance tire' sure... but the 3000gt vr4 is AWD so you're not really relying 100% on the tire for the grip... the AWD is doing alot of the work (even at the autox) ...and those tires were FREAKING LOUD at the autox.

Now on the michelens... they are grippier ...and they're being more tested as this car is inherently unstable (RWD with good torque)... and when you get them moving they rearely screach...even if you're fully sideways...

so i like how quiet they are... yet like you said they are expensive.

I don't drive much (15k miles in the last 2 years) so something like Pilot sport cups is an option for me...but i'm also thinking of some BFG tires as they are priced a bit better than michelen rubber.

Hankooks are not bad for the price... but they are nothing like the top manufacturer's for sure ... (noise, comfort, max handling, wet handling ...etc)

I have Michelin Pilot Sport Cups semi slick (summer use), best dry tyre i have ever had.

For cold & wet weather I use Toyo T1-Rs which really grip in the wet.

Alright, well judging by the general negative feelings towards kumho, i guess I will just wait to do my inspection, and save for some better rubber.

from your guys's responses my best choice for rubber would be michellin pilot sport, pilot cup, or toyo t1-r. Any others that are worth looking into? Please post your experience with them. And what size rims/rubber are you running?

Im on 17x7.5 ans was planning to go with 225/45/17 or 225/40/17.

got with 225/45/17. i have them on my 17x7.5s and love them . great ride quality.

I'm running 235/40/17.

My vote is with the Michellin pilot's or the Goodyear Eagle F1's wink.gif

Khumos are good tyres for the price...I used them on my four and they did very well...for the best tyres Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3`s...the best tyres you can get, better than Toyo`s, michelins etc etc. Been using the Eagles for a few months now and theyare fantastic in ALL conditions.

I found the Goodyear Eagle F1's were no where near as good as the Michellin pilot's.
The Pilot's also lasted a lot longer on track then the F1's.

Each to their own I suppose biggrin.gif
