im starting to think im a GT owner, and dont even know it - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #65751 36 posts Started by grasby
ok so after a couple weeks of running from one parts store to the next
and custom modifying parts to fit my car
im starting to think i dont have the 7a-fe
whenever i try to get parts, and tell them i have an st
its never the right part, at least not when it comes to the engine and transmission etc...
my car was rebuilt at some point, and my aunt said it was an ST when i bought it from her
but im thinking that either i have a different transmission, or a different engine
so two questions
1. where on the engine do i find the identifying stamp
2. where can i find the same thing on the trans, and anyone know anywhere i can go for info on the trans?
my pride an joy has been locced away in the shop for weeks
i can hear him calling to me from across the street
please help me get ahab bacc out onto the streets
lol
thanks

look at the vin on the firewall, the first few numbers/letters will tell you what you have.

Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)13.6@108MPH, 5SFTE Powered
ok this is going to really make me seem like an amatuer but...
whats the firewall?
and where is it?
if it isnt a part of the actaul engine i dont think it will work
because my engine or transmission is definately not the one that came in the car
You may also wish to look at engine pay shots on the site here.

gt engine bay:

its also hard to see, but the 7afe (top pic) sits vertical, where the 5sfe (bottom pic) sits at an angle.

you know why they put sheep at the edge of a cliff.... that way they push back!(2:27:32 AM) edit: please f*cking work, f*ck, sh*t, piss(2:28:08 AM) edit: that did the trick
yea, im still not sure
i cant go look at my car to decide
but im really starting to think i have a gt
if i remember correctly my alternator sits closer to the top of the engine
like the 5sfe
both alternators sit close to the top...

Do you have any information on the car... like your Title or registration... something with the VIN on it?

you have/had hubcabs. GTs have alloy wheels.

That's pretty much all i get from the pics you have of your car.

i meant the motore may be gt
the car was originally st, i know that for a fact
the title says it
my problem is at some point
not sure when, all i know is before i had the car
someone put either a new engine, a new transmission, or both
sorry i shouldve specified that my problem is due to an engine or transmission swap
not that i dont know what engine was originally in the car
i cant take a pic right now, the car is closed up in the shop
and locced
im sure im not just getting the wrong parts
i went to oreilly's
autozone
advance etc...

i bought a haynes manual, and found out my cv axle should be like 34 point something inches
and the one i took out of my car
the one thats worked fine since i had it
was about 39 inches

well if its real slow its a ST if its just slow its a GT lol, nah if its the GT it will clearly say 5sfe on the engine.
would the 5s fe deff have the red on the cover?
my engine doesnt, it just looks plain

where will it say 5sfe?

where will it say it on the actual engine?
and since i already have the quicc post box open
where can i find some identifying numbers on my trans?
lol, if i can find those numbers i can solve this mystery first thing tomorrow
Not sure man, a picture of the engine will be the easiest way. if u can get a pic tomorrow it will be easy.

plus the fact that all my friends are a town over
and my ride has beeen out of commision for weeks now
so im getting pretty isolated from the real world
other than the 6gc forums i dont really talk to people
other than at work, and most of the people i work with are cracc heads
and smelly old trucc drivers
The easiest thing I can think of to help you is if the engine says 2200 on the top, its the 2.2L 5s-fe

I have no idea why someone would swap a 5s into an ST. If you're going to swap anything, then why not go for a 3s

'99 Celica GT - Sold'11 Mazdaspeed3
well it was wrecked at one point
i figured that much out
my guess is they needed a new engine, and the 5s was handy
because im pretty sure they weren going for performance
just trying to get it running

well the guys who owns the shop its in isnt coming to his shop today
so i cant try comparing pics
or figuring which engine i have.

im just having alot of problems because i dont know what engine and tranny i have
the main problem im having right now are my cv axles arent matching up to anything celica
so im just going to take the new one, and extend it to the lenght of the old one
everything else on the axle is the same, splin count, diameter, etc..
and im tired of waiting on my car to be fixed
tonight.... i make my own cv axle
everyone keep your fingers crossed

Fire it up. biggrin.gif
on the 7afe the engine id is under the top coolant hose, top right hand corner of the block, not the head, the block. on the 5sfe and the others it located above the transmission, below the head. it will give yea the engine code. hope that helps, transmission type i have not clue
ok well i got the cv axle made now
came out great, 100% straight
will put the car bacc together tomorrow
and hopefully ill be bacc out on the road with ahab
haha

well just look at how the motor is tilted...if it tilts back more then its a gt motor if its just sit straight up and flat then is a st.
