Electrical Problems (checked ALL fuses) - 6G Celicas Forums

Hey guys..

just bought a 1995 Celica... everythings fine with it except for few electrical problems... cant figure out whats going on..

Heres what happens.. NONE of my interior lights work, the clock doesn't work and hazards dont turn on. I checked ALL the fuses (under the hood and under the steering wheel) and they all work fine (used a tester to check)

I searched a LOT on this forum and people are saying it COULD be a grounding problem, if so how do I fix that? If its not what do you guys think it is?

Also I noticed today when my doors are closed car is running, hand break is up and gear is in Park and seat belt is not in, the clock will turn on and say "1:00" but its VERYY faint like I can barely see it..


What do ya guys think?

check the ground wire from the negative terminal on the battery. It should split off into two pieces. One wire bolts to the side of your fender (or any metal part of the cars frame) and the other one goes to a bolt right on top of your trans.

yup. splits into two.

One goes tranny the other one is bolted to the body right beside the latch for the hood. And both of them are bolted properly and not loosely...

see if any of the wires with the male and female adapters are plugged in correctly...for the tach, the clock, and the dimming light knob making sure everything is tightly connected.

Yup... everything is connected properly... checked and re-checked...

check your hazards relay, maybe if that goes out it whacks out the whole circuit

That's not going to effect the clock or interior lights. smile.gif

Do your turn signals work?

When you say no interior lights, what about dash lights, door courtesy lights, light around ignition switch, radio illumination, ect.

Are there any lights at all that work inside the car?

How about your cigarette lighter?

Turn signals work,

Dash lights work, courtesy lights dont work, there is not light around ignition, radio illumination does work, Dome lights dont work, inside trunk light doesnt work. Door chime doesnt work.

Cigarette lighter does work.

wait there's a door chime on these cars???? only on specific models or on all??? mine doesnt work either then

my lights work, but lights dim down significantly when i do things like hit the brake pedal, use a switch, or downshift. Im thinking a ground kit may solve my problem, could be your solution too.

or maybe it's just a complete electrical mal function in your interior somewhere, which i hope it isn't.

If your gauge cluster is not working either in terms of lighting, check your "X" fuse under your hood, it may be blown.

Well, you probably have several issues, unless a harness is [partially] cut somewhere.
Your dome fuse powers most of those, so I would double check that.
However your hazards aren't powered by that fuse, so it's possible the flasher is bad, or the switch.

It does sound like a ground problem, however there are multiple grounds involved here, and the cigarette lighter shares a ground with some of the non working parts, so that kind of throws that out the window.

Unfortunately I'm not as familiar with the 6th gens, so I don't know exactly how the wiring is routed and where.

All right... new symptom.

When it rains EVERYTHING works... all the lights, hazards and the clock...

then after couple days when everything drys up it ALL stops slowly.. the hazards go out first then the lights then the clock.

grounding problem?!

what chu guys think?

BUMP!

anyone?! still having this problem frown.gif,

now its affecting my alarm system, saying door is open when its not etc... (cause i think its affecting the door open/close switch)

Flasher relay??? is your dimmer switch plugged in??
I don't normally drive fast, but when I do its on a curvy section of this island

ya dimmer is plugged in...

but it works when it rains hard! and just stops working 2-3 days after it rains... how can water have something to do with this lol...

im not even kidding.. EVERYTHING works perfectly when it rains hard.. but stops working a few days after the rain..

Water will complete a circuit that otherwise would be open. What it sounds like is there is a bad connection, be it a common ground or power source that leads to all these items, and when it rains the water seeps in to wherever this bad connection is and becomes the contact point. When the water dries, the circuit is open again.

What you need to do is get the wiring diagrams for your interior lights and such that don't work, and find where they all have a common power or ground. I'm guessing there is a big connector somewhere that is bad, or like has been said before a bad ground.

Check your fuse box in the engine bay, you might have a loose ground wire going somewhere, or a connection point that is rusted and wont make contact to ground.

I'm having the same issue. i figured out how to the interior lights to function, however still no chime or clock...

Does your cigarette lighter ring light up and does your door indicator turn on in your gauge cluster? If yes to both, check your integration relay with a voltmeter, the brown box which is part of the fuse panel on your drivers side. Also just to check, do you have your keys in the ignition when opening your door? I know its a strange question but the door chime is mainly to let you know your keys are in the ignition.

how do i check the relay? what kinda voltage spec am i looking for?

Here's a layout of the wiring at the kick panel and integration relay. You basically wanna check the dome line for the clock and as far as the door, it should be linked in with the open door warning light. Test around though and see what you find.

Clock doesn't work period? That is a tough one. Going through sequence basically when the key is turned to acc that signals the clock to power on, the dome fuse provides power at that point to illuminate the clock and isn't controlled by the dimmer until your tail light relay enabled when you turn on the marker lights. Going through that rules out that yours could be a fuse issue, I would suggest getting a clock from another car or take yours out and try it in another. Simply put the backlight of the clock is probably bad, let me know what you come up with.

the clock does not have a back light its a built in LED number display that dims. swap in a new clock, and report...

Swapped out the clock with a known working one.

Same issue.

hmm, i would grab a multimeter, and test the illum and B+ see whats going on there...
