My 3rd Gen 3SGTE Swap Thread - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #73105 297 posts Started by presure2
So as most of ya know, i've had jenns 94 GT setup with a 5sfte for just about 5 years now, and its time to move on.

after going thru all the options we decided on a 3rd gen 3sgte for all the obvious reasons.
_jim_ has been selling 3s motor sets and clips to a few diffrent members here, and is a good friend of mine, so i gave him a call, and discussed my options with him.
he set me up with a great deal on a clip minus body panels ect, since we already have the '4 front end on jenns car.
he delivered it to my house on friday.
we're pretty sure the clip is a 94, it has ~34,000 miles on it (~55,000km) and is in GREAT shape.

some pics of the progress so far.

once we got the hood and bumper off, this is what we had:

it came with a blitz BOV, blitz spark plug wires, and blitz ground kit.

the turbo has virtually NO shaft play, and spins super free and smooth as butter.

the leader and supervisor of team "JDM guy"

this morning i dropped out the 3s, its much easier to just remove the suspension, crossmembers, motor and tranny as one piece out the bottom.

this pic shows how i lifted the clip up over the motor once i dropped it onto a dolly

the motor with the intercooler off out of the clip:

the suspension and crossmember

and chassis tag:

more to come as progress is made.

thanks guys!!
AMCMoe PM'd me yesterday, to let me know that the clip is a '95, which is cool to know.

another great thread Manny, please post lots of pics and give good details on how you did the wiring....I have a few ideas up my sleeve for my car. Oh by the way, are you going to install the engine "as is" or will you tear it down and re-fresh it?

PM me what you need and a price will, i have everything on the clip except body panels, headlights, and brakes.
obviously all the swap parts are being used..lol

definetly not tearing it down, ill do alot of cleaning up and coating of some sort on lots of parts, and tbelt, but other than that, im only gonna do whats needed. after all, its only got 34,000 miles on it wink.gif

got the tranny off and the motor on a stand today, the more i take off the more i realize how nice and clean the motor is. what a beautiful thing.

looking up at the block, you can see the oil feed line attched to the block on the right there.

the backside

the typical trouble spot for the 3/5s motors, under the dizzy

the blitz spark plug wires, which apparently, they no longer make:

and the blitz BOV, a bit pitted, but it'll look good once its all cleaned up, however, i wont be using it. ( we still like the HKS over the blitz sound)

the steering wheel

the upper timing cover after a quick wipe

this weekend i want to tear into the clip, get everything off it and start cutting it up. FUN!!! smile.gif

Awesome Manny, I am glad you are happy with the motor...and I am glad it went to such a great home. I am looking forward to seeing this in person again real soon.

Lucky, the power steering pump on the 3rd gen is easy to work with.

So are you going to be using an e153 transmission or stick with the tired s54? I'm surprised that transmission has held up through all those years of your beating lol!!

good **** man...thats gonna be a nice ride when its done

Any mod plans for it, or staying somewhat simple at first? obviously these things with little work put down 330 and thats more than enough for a DD..lol...

im interested to see how this thread goes man so keep up the good work...this weather is awesome for goin back out and workin on the car after that winter...im looking to get mine back into shape real soon

The S54 is pretty strong, it can hold up to 300 whp.

I know that the s54 is strong. Mine has proven itself up until the input shaft of the cv shaft snapped inside the diff, causing me to lose reverse. When that happened I struck a deal on an e153 lsd trans.

I'll be using the same s54. I can't afford to do the e153 swap right now.

No big plans for the motor, I'm just gonna add a helper spring for the wastegate, make a nice 3" intake, use the water injection off the 5sfte setup, the same MBC and exhaust with a new front peice, although I may add a resonator to quiet it down a little around town.
I'd like to install cam gears... I'm trying to trade some bodywork labor for them with a fellow member... smile.gif (we love u Steff!!)
that's about it other than cleaning things up and tidying up the engine bay.

This weekend we are working on dissasembling the clip, I cut the spot welds and removed the radiator support Thursday, today I'm gonna take the dash, ect off and start cutting the clip up down to the firewall.
Pics tonight!

looking forward to those pics. biggrin.gif Hope everything goes well.

oh true.. the e153 is probably the best bet in the long run.

im doing basically the same swap as manny (only with a FMIC) and im reusing my stock s54 tranny withhhhh 205k on it .. it drives and shifts pretty clean, u think it will hold with the mileage?

It'll hold mine, had 215,000 until it went due to the broken axle.

DEFINETLY NOT. wink.gif
all those parts are for sale, like SUPER cheap.
i just want someone to come get them out of my garage. lol
got most of the frame rails cut off last night, and all the dash parts off and basicly got it down to the bare firewall.
didnt take pics while we were doing it, ill go out in a bit and get some pics of the carnage. lol

when we got the clip, the intercooler and stuff on top of the motor seemed to have this weird "film" on it, almost textured, that seemed to trap most of the dust and dirt that is visable on the motor.
i took a little lacquer thinner to a corner of the IC, and it started comming off, it almost seems like the previous owner may have attempted to spray some kind of clear coat over things, but very poorly.
once i started wiping it off, the intercooler REALLY started to come back to life.
a quick pic i snapped last night of the results ( you can see the film on the entry neck of the IC still):

yummy!

for you guys that may see this, and are looking for RHD parts, be on the lookout for a for sale thread soon, i have the FULL dash minus the CC unit, and full front SS suspension and steering rack, excluding brakes and of course all the RHD firewall stuff.

cameron, start your own thread for your questions about your swap. but since the thread jack is already on:
the S54 will be just fine, provided its in good shape when you start, and your not bangin gears like your a race car driver, and launching it at every stop light like your racing NHRA.
my tranny has been taking a beating at close to and over 300hp for just about 5 years now, and art (lagos) has been on his stock tranny for longer than that.
