WTB: 3s or BEAMs - 6G Celicas Forums

So im pretty sure my 2.2 just crapped out on me, and im looking into getting a 2nd or 3rd gen 3s or a BEAMs. And hopefully just using my stock tranny with a upgraded clutch and flywheel. So if anyone could tell me who to talk to about doing the swap and so on please let me know, and i would like to get my hands on one with the uncut wiring harness please. Thanks in advance for any help i get. And im looking to do this asap i have the money saved up to do so, and this is my daily so im looking to get it back on the road as soo as possible, so i figure if im going to have to put another engine in why not put in a 3s.or a BEAMs. AS if someone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldnt have to move any transmission mounts, engine mounts ext. in order for it to work. I've been thinking for the past few weeks about this and I dont really want to go boost I think a BEAMs is my best option. Plenty of power for me, and makes a great DD.

My friend orded his Honda engine from this website and i was wondering if any of you have heard of it or maybe bought from it ? www.jdmtigerjapanese.com Says they ship the engine anywhere in my state for just 180$ and thats engine and transmission. thanks in advance.
Personally, I think think the beams is a waste of money for what you get...but I know there are fans of this engine around here so I will keep it at that.

For around the same price you can swap to a GEN3 3sgte. Same amount of work, basically the same money as a beams, but much better HP, and IMO MUCH better motor...dollar for dollar.

I can get you a GEN3 3sgte with complete W2A IC system for 2200 with free shipping to your door.

Or I can do a GEN3 3sgte without the factory W2A IC system (Perfect if you want to go with a front mount intercooler) for 1800 with free shipping to your door.

So this motor is 1500 with another $200 in shipping fees, so you are at 1700 already. See what I mean that for the same amount of money you can get the GEN3 3sgte swap...which is clearly the better of the two motors.

The only reason I'm how do you say sketchy, about the GEN3 is that I dont want to upgrade my transmission if I dont have too. I've heard that my stock one cant hold 250hp, then I've heard it should be fine with a new clutch and flywheel, and then I've heard that it could last for a week a month or years. Or i could just pay an additional like 1200 for another transmission which is what i would like to avoid doing. Im looking for something that can give me the basic amount of horsepower which is like 230ish at the most is what im after. I honestly dont want anything above that.

In all seriousness, could i just get a 5s and buy a turbo kit from you Jim ? and it give me about the same amount of HP im after ? Or should i just get a Gen2 or Gen3. I'm just scared of the Gen3 for the above reasons.

Yes, 3sgte is cool, but its just not a simple swap. Your stock tranny will hold, god knows how long.

Yes the e153 is available for 1000 more and then the axles, the piping, the if you do the top cooler then better get a hood, and yada yada yada.

BEams comes with its own tranny. Ill be honest with you, its not as fast as a turbo, but its fun, and better compared to the 5s.

Everybody wants 300 hp?, no. At least not me. I love my beams and dont regret it. Now parts are more rare, but it can be found.

Let me clear the air here on this topic. The S54 WILL BE FINE for using with a GEN3 3sgte. The S54 has been beaten to death by MANY users above and beyond 300whp (360bhp). So if you arent looking for 400whp (470bhp) then dont worry about it.

If you are looking for 230hp (about 190whp) then any motor will be fine for you.

Since you current 5s is out of commission, I would swap. If you had a perfectly running 5s, I would gladly sell you the turbo kit off of shannons car...but it wont be cost effective for you since you will have to put in another 5s. But yes, the turbo kit I am selling on a stock 5s will EASILY make 230hp at about 7psi. We made as much as 285whp (350hp) on shannons car at 17psi on a stock unopened 5s.

But for your case, I would swap to a GEN3 since you have a bum motor anyway. You will spend about them same at this point, and have a better motor. A GEN3 will make 230hp with literally no mods done to it. every mod you deide to do later will only make you happier that you went with a GEN3 3sgte. Because when the HP bug bites you, you are a bit stuck with a Beams, the same as you are with the 5sfe. Every mod you do to a GEN3 will drastically increase HP, to the point that you will feel EVERY mod you do.

So you start with your 230hp right out of the box stock GEN3, then later on add an intake for the turbo....then a boost controller and turn up the boost a bit. At this point you spent about $70 in mods and increased you HP to about 300hp (240whp)...then when you get tired of that....you throw on an exhaust system and turn the boost up to 18psi. you are now at 360hp (310whp)...etc. The GEN3 is a VERY fersitile engine and is perfect for the guy (or girl) who is looking for a little more umph then what they have now, or an all out street machine.

I dont want 300hp lol ive had a car in the past that had over 300 and bc of that i wrecked it... i want half of what i had then 200ish. I figure the beams is the best bet bc all i honestly want CAI and exhaust and im happy..... Which is a honestly direct drop into a 96 GT. Like i can just take my 5s out and the tranny out and then pop in the next engine and tranny and wire everything good to go. I want something thats basic with no cutting ext.

your a good salesman ! haha but anyways if it can hold 300 at the most, and is a direct swap with my stock transmission i'll go this route. I just thought the BEAMs was easier kindasad.gif But if the 3s swap is direct and easy then i'll prob be going this route. You said you could ship it to my door or the shop im doing it at for 1700 ?

Why is the GEN3 3sgte not an easy swap? Did you have to do wiring to make your Beams swap work...YES. Now I havent looked into what is involved in coverting a beams harness, but I have done several GEN3 3sgte swaps...and the wiring is cake.

He has a GT, so he has a trans...so that is a saving right there. and IT WILL HOLD.

No need for Intercooler piping if you keep the stock W2A IC which is very efficient....and you seem to be miss informed on this...The stock W2A IC WILL CLEAR a stock USDM hood.

I just dont get the hipe I suppose. I dont see the point in buying a beams for the same money as a GEN3 3sgte when you get nothing out of it.

Gen3 makes more HP (which you dont HAVE to run 300hp, keep it stock as hell and be happy with the 230hp it comes with...which is more then beams to begin with) more common of a swap, more support, more performance, better availabilty of parts, and an overall bigger community.

Like I said...I know there are fans of the beams on here, which is why I dont want to turn this into a debate for those that already have it...but dollar for dollar, I cant think of one reason to swap to a beams.

Hahaha, a salesman is only as good as what he is selling. I just let the facts of how great a swap the GEN3 is sell itself, makes my job that much easier.

The S54 is a direct swap onto the 3sgte. You will just need to run a "hybrid" clutch. Tweak sells them, as well as most of the big name clutch companys. All it is, is a 5s disk with a 3s pressure plate.

If you want to go with a FMIC, I can remove the factory Water to Air Intercooler stuff, and ship it anywhere in the continental US for $1800 USD

If you want the GEN3 with complete factory Water to Air intercooler system, it is $2200 with free shipping to anywhere in the continental US.

Alright and could i do the swap myself in about a weeks time ? Or would i have to take it to a shop, I have basic knowledge, I'd like to do it myself i just dont want to mess anything up.

Also I keep running into the same write up about doing this swap, It states that my stock exhaust wont bolt to the 3s so id have to get a custom one, and it says that i would need a very rare LHD wiring harness and i couldnt use the one it comes with, also it says that even if i did it myself it would still cost 5-6K which im honestlly looking to spend like 3-3500 As i dont want to clean my entire savings on my car.

ive driven both, the BEAMS is a fun but it really is no comparrison to the 3s. you can still make 230hp with the 3s if you run stock boost, which is what like 14psi i believe? but when something pulls up along side of you revvvvin like crazy u can jus reach over and boost up the boost a lil and BOOOM good bye ur gone and the kid with the riced out civic is left in the dust lol.

i recently bought a 3s off of jim and im very pleased with it (i havent put it in yet tho) but buy it with the W2A IC bc there is more work if you dont bc you have to make your own FMIC. but you can still make 230hp with the 3s eassssilyyy and you cna also get alot moree to if you need too! also dustin (batman772) said in his thread that he gets 25mpg at i think 15psi which is just as good as the 5s with more then DOUBLE the hp biggrin.gif

A lot of the things you're concerned about with the 3S are the same that Cam (ted95) was, he also thought he wanted a beams. He drove our Beams and Dustin's 3S and now he owns a 3rd gen 3S.

There are fans of the Beams, I love our Beams. But those that have a Beams motor usually know they want it and its not for power goals at all. The third gen 3S definitely has more power, in that respect you get a whole lot more power and ability to expand for your money. But I do disagree that the Beams is a "waste of money" and I disagree that the 3rd gen 3S is a "better motor" because once you've had the chance to get close and see how the Beams works, its actually a very interesting and much more advanced motor overall. But very little room to expand with the Beams, it is what it is.

I actually emailed that guy and he told me he'd take 1200 for it. I think im honestly going to go BEAMs. I dont have big power goals honestly and im looking to do it myself. Thanks for your offer Jim but i think imma go BEAMs just to be different and one of the few who has one. Like i said im not looking for power. Plus i honestly dont think i have the money to maintain a 3s or even swap it in. Bc what if my tranny does give then im SOL lol.

well if you go beams expect to have a loudd asss car lol, stefs and dustins beams (hurley97 and batmann772) is pretttty loud bc its a N/A motor. but ya make sure the guy has EVERYTHING you need for the swap. goodluck my dude.

And do i just use my 5s transmission axles or do i have to by new ones for this LSD transmission ? Also i just read your write up hurley and batman, you said it was pretty simple about how much did it cost to install, if u dont mind me asking, including belts, pumps, ext. And for the badass exhaust ?

they did it themselves at mannys (presure2) garage, manny helped out with the swap as well. anddd i dont have the answers for the axels but i think u need new ones, dont quote me on that lol.

And for the Beams fans...maybe I was a bit harsh saying waste of money. I should have said over priced. I would consider the beams swap a "nice" swap for someone in this situation who blew up there 5sfe and needs to pull the motor anyways, but not for 1700 shipped to his door. A new low mileage 5s will run you about $600.....so if the beams swap was say $800, then hell why not.

But let me ask you beams fans this (and njccmd2002, dont back out the 3sgte vs beams debates, there is no need for that)...

The way I see it is, the person who wants to swap to a beams, more then likely (but not always) blew up there 5s, and there mentality is since they need to pull the motor anyway, why not just throw in something with a bit more power, right? Well that makes sense to me, but the money they are spending on a Beams swap...they can get a 98+ 5s motor (which is a GREAT motor by the way, ESPECIALLY if you plan of ever boosting down the road), and a set of performance cams for the 98+ 5s motor....which will give them the kick in power they are looking for, TRULY be a drop in swap, no wiring needed, AND they can still pass emissions....and STILL be under the cost of Beams swap.

So the question is this...Why spend the money, and the aggravation on a Beams swap (aggravation meaning wiring, transmission, axles, JDM motor not having everything required for the swap. and emissions), when you can get basically the same thing with a cammed 98+ 5sfe, and you dont have to worry about ANYTHING, including emissions?

rarity, 1st vvti motor, etc. people will do what they wanna do...... no need for everyone to argue about whats best, or whats the best value, or who is right or who is wrong, these are all feasible S engine swaps. I think the reason njccmd backed out is cause it is useless arguing on something that is just a preference, there need not be a reason for why people swap what, they can do what they want with their car and their money.

I mean no offense to anyone, i just see this as pointless myself.

Truth. He did ask for advice though, so advice was given. 3S is the way to go if you plan on making 300+ whp in the future. I don't think 300 whp is an insane amount of power. It' also depends on what dyno is being used.

Wait.... so Jim your saying i could honestly just get another 5s for about 600 bux and turbo it and make the power im looking for and keep my axles and EVERYHTING else with no headaches bc im NOT looking for any headaches at all.

You can just use your GT axles, thats what we have in our Beams.
Like ted95 said, we did it ourselves in a friends garage. The exhaust we bought our own muffler and resonator and some piping and had manny put it all together. As far as parts go, I'll have to look up what it all cost.
