Steve and I were just talking about this... the short answer is that there is never time to fiddle with stuff like that during race day. The big boys (both of them) have people whose sole job during service is to wash the car and swap out GoPros.

Things change someone else will buy it and will still be raced, I probably should have picked a larger vehicle to begin with. You don't realize how much room you lose with a cage and helmet.

Liquid nitrogen next weekend. 180 liters of it. All the rubberized undercoating is coming off and rubber stuff in the seams inside the car.

Probably need another 10k to fix the engine properly....

NJ, you can get it at any bigger gas supply store. Airgas is everywhere, but they were double the price of a local company. I think its about $150 for a 180l tank delivered +$1000 deposit for the tank.

The rally community has a 'liquid nitrogen deathray' that someone made and is pass around from person to person.

Yeah... probably depends on what it means when it says "block damaged". You used to be able to find Group A parts at Fensport.co.uk but I think those have all disappeared. I think at that point in the sport, while heavily machined, the block probably started off stock.. so if you know what to do... the rest is just shop time...

That's so motherloving cool. Imagine giving that a second life, a real rally car (one of the prettier ones!) for 80k. Do some wrenching and give it 500bhp and that's worth the money.

Edit - dat cage.

Here's my post from rally anarchy about the liquid nitrogen.

Alright so, everyone can actually see the process I tried to take a video of it. It was just me and my dad so no one to really take videos. The clip is him trying to hold the death ray and chip at the same time. Its really a 2 person job.

FYI, we were able to get the tank down the hill without a problem. Cut a 4x8 sheet of plywood in two and was able to just slide it down the hill. The tanks base is wide enough that it didn't take much force to keep it upright even when on the steepest part of the hill.

Some thoughts on doing this. Took a while to get the hang of it, we actually cracked the shell in the weaker areas a few times when we started. If the stuff is frozen and ready to come off you dont have to hit it hard. Once we got the hang of it we didnt crack the metal anywhere. Not a big deal just have to weld a little more in a few places.

A fan is absolutely necessary, would have been nice to have a 3rd person holding a fan the entire time time and positioning correctly. Its very difficult to see especially when you're working in small corners where the gas will circle. The flat areas an fan blowing was good enough.

Its much much easier to start and keep going. If you start and stop it takes a long time for the hose to cool down to where liquid is coming out and the shell to cool everything enough so that you can move quickly.

A 180l tank is barely enough. We wasted some and didnt get everythign I wanted to, but we got most of it. The key is if you get most of it you can go back with a scraper or wire wheel later as it doesnt adhere to the metal nearly as well after being frozen. You can kinda hear the stuff cracking off the shell.

A metal scraper works really well on the flat areas. Freeze it, give it a few taps with the chipper, then use a scraper.

Wheel well before and after. The wheel was was hard to do due to not being able to see. The fan created a vortex in there.

One tank for the wheel well? How much was the tank?

I did my car with needle scaler and then blasted

No, I did most of the car. Complete underside minus where the wheel well was. All the seems on the inside of the body. There's pretty much no rubber anywhere on the car. Took about 4-5 hours, with two of us.

Now I wont die stitching the inside and welding the cage in this time! Nothing to catch on fire.

A lot of my friends here build and have built Subies (including me). The record we have from ignition off to engine on a stand is 45 minutes with two people haha waaay more time friendly than the Celica..

I'll probably get another RS, eventually..

Anyway, looks good as always! thumbsup.gif

We are going to do the engine in the race car today... I will have to remember to time it.

Stitch welding the underside is done, also the receivers for the pinmount jack stands are done. Need to do the HDPE underbody protection mounts, and some kind of fuel tank skid plate; then i'm done with the rotisserie. Cage starts as soon as I get the celica ready for sno*drift. Should start on that around thanksgiving.

Finished up the jack stands and underbody protection.

It's too bad you never swapped a 3S-GTE into your Celica. I'd like to know how it would compare to the Subie as a rally car.

It would be ok, gear ratios aren't ideal for the celica. I'm still running the subaru NA; same class. Really the biggest reason i'm building a new car is, well one cause I get bored, but more room. In the car all day me and my dad, my seat is not in an ideal position. Really just want more room.

It's 1/8" HDPE plastic.

Started fixing the celica today. Needs some bondo and paint should be ready to go.

Figured out why my toe was so screwed up in the rear. I thought the ear that broke off the hube just snapped off clean. Put it back and welded in the same position. Well it obviously twisted then snapped haha.

Well I was going to paint the celica this weekend, but the paint didnt come in time.

Worked on the dual master setup with balance bar on the impreza. Was a huge pain using the stock pedals, solid 2 days of work figuring out how to do it aligning everything etc. Might be worth paying $300 for a complete aftermarket pedal assembly, vs. the $50 for just the balance bar if I had to do it in the future.

The pedal was drilled to give about a 6:1 ratio, the stock ratio is around 4.5:1. Eliminating power brakes.

God - I hope that doesn't fail during a rally...

Why would you think it would fail. Balance bar setup is used in all kinds of racing. I still need to add a little gusseting to firm it up a little, but it doesn't yield at all bolted into the car as it is now.

Not the balance bar, the home brew pedal setup. And I am not doubting your welding skills, I think I would feel better if could see and hold it in person. It's probably plenty sturdy.... you know what - I take it all back!
