What are you using for swaybars?
GT4 rear, nothing in the front; for gravel. Snow, i run neither.

I'll have some pics and vids soon from STPR. Good rally, 2nd in class, but two of the fast guys didn't finish. On stage was great, tons of issues and last minute work getting ready though.

So... STPR story. Day before I leave found both from wheel bearings were bad. Change them.

Thursday after recce we run the practice stage. Wheel bearings making aweful noise, brand new ones. Fortunately I got bearings and there's a subaru shop open pretty much all night the weekend of the rally. Get them pressed in and find out the knuckles and hubs are pretty much ruined. Bearing just almost falls into the hub.

Was going to run it, but found a junkyard with hubs about an hour away. Go get them come back put them on and make it to parc expose with 6 minutes to spare. Stages start, battery light comes on, stage 1; dead alternator. Run on battery power and the car shuts off as I cross the finish off SS3. Get flat towed back to service. 15 minutes late, 2:30 in penalties.

First day is only 5 stages, with the last two being super specials, only like .5 mile each in a stadium environment. Run the 1st one, and debeed a tire... was running 25psi hot, tires were cold probably sitting at 22 and i should have been at 28. Lose another 1:30 on SS5 cause of it.

Obviously I didnt bring my spare alternator, so I went and searched boxes at the autoparts store. Got something I thought I could make work. Didn't get to start working on the car till 10pm. 2am, finished rigging up alternator brackets with what I had. (Guys I was staying with were up till 430 getting their car ready cause they rolled)

Saturday morning, i took the skidplate off and tried to fix the broken exhaust. (Broke on ss3, right after the header) Anyways, we made it to check in at with less than a minute to spare. Ran pretty well all day, minus the fact that my dad was screaming cause i couldnt hear cause the exhaust was so loud. Missed a lot of notes so I had to take it slower in some turns.

Got 4th in class first regional would have been 3rd without the time penalties, then 2nd in the 2nd regional. Two of the top guys went out. There were 3 guys in my class at the rally I cant keep pace with if they dont break.

Here's a few vids.

3sge is dead in the low rpms, it has like negative torque with awd under 4k rpms.

Steve, in that first video I could hear the engine WAY before you came around the corner. I knew that was the Celica by the noise, and in comparison to a lot of cars, you were on it a GOOD part of the way. Nice driving.

Thanks haha, that's what happends when you basically are running an open header.... its loud.

Yeah, just have no torque coming out of those low speed turns. Dont' have enough power to keep the wheels lose and in the upper rpms.

There must be some cams to reduce the lack of torque right? Or some quick mods to do that, because you drove great into that sharp corner, but then as you said, car needed some time to get into revs and its full power. Not putting it down, this is by far greatest thread on here, but it's too obvious laugh.gif
Could bolt a beams in there, Get more umph, or just sack up and go with the gte and be done with it....
Beams still has no torque down low. Don't really want a turbo engine yet we'll see what happens.

Stroker?

Great idea. 5s, stroked out with ge head for better flow and cams?
Steve,

I am guessing adding the turbo will bump you into a different class not to mention all the baggage that comes with a turbo (heat, lag, premium fuel, etc)... I am guessing.. and this is just my ****ty opinion, you can probably eek way more time out of the driver than adding some low end torque... Keep at it and MOAR RALLY SCHOOL!!!1111!1!

Conversely, its time to put your big boy pants on:

Haha, none of you guys would like this answer, but i'd build a 2.5rs before I put that much into the engine. Parts are readily available, gear sets, cams, for cheap; and it has more head room which I would like.

That's a smart answer in my opinion - the 2.5rs would be a better supported platform when it comes to parts and general overall performance.

Either way, watching the video our driving was entertaining and really makes me want to get into rally racing at some point.

Has no more Celicas
So, doing some stuff on the RX7, rewiring it and just doing some things a little better this time around that I didn't do right the first time. Putting it up for sale soon, if anyone has 30k burning a hole in their pocket. Snapped a pic. Also some from the last race.

For me, hards maybe 3 rallys. Mediums maybe 2. And thats stretching it longer than I probably should. Most guys probably go through a set per longer rally. I'm cheap.

The top end of the field, go through an entire set per service. So basically 30-60 miles, then swap tires. There tires are shredding in that timeframe. You can see how deep the thread is, new they are probably at least double the thickness of stock street tires.

The second pic in the first pic, i'd consider done, or at least close.

These are just trashed.

Back to the whole engine thing, did you ever look into 2mz-fe's? I just found out about them today because I need to source the intake cams since they fit in the 1mz-fe since they are pretty aggressive.

The 2mz-fe is a 2.5L engine that puts out about 200hp @6000 and 180ft-lbs @4600. Just something to look into if you want to go with a V6.

You said this way back when:
I havent had enough time to search, but yes a small v6 would be great.

V6 under 2.65 liters might be tough though.

"Open Light Class: Vehicles must be AWD, normally-aspirated and
derived from models sold globally in minimum quantities of 1000.
The maximum displacement is 2650cc for overhead cam engines
and 3313cc for pushrod engines."

Had me intrigued for a second, but 3 cylinders exit pretty much right where the AWD center diff sets. Not saying its impossible but would most likely a custom exhaust and modifying the firewall.

Not in very many cars either, cheapy on ebay right now but would be worried if I needed to source one in a pinch.

The trans issue isn't hard to fix
Seen it done in an alltrac with a awd 5speed rav4 trans
The transfer case is alil more compact so it all fits
The only difference is the gearing in the trans is lower but the final drive gear is same as gt4

Yeah, the exhaust is the only thing that's go me a little worried with this build.....which is going to be a long time in the making anyway. I also noticed that the 1mz block doesn't need to be trimmed down for the gt4 transmission to fit. It doesn't have anything sticking out where the transfer case would be, on the transmission, like the 5s does. I'm picking up an AWD transmission next week and hopefully I'll have the block stripped by the end of next week so I'll be able to confirm whether it does or not.

I can tell you that unless that rav 4 transmission, looks like a FWD tranny, there's no room to bring the exhaust down without some crazy design. The steering rack and center diff block everything back there.

The gearing in the GT4 sucks anyways though, I'd trade my spare GT4 transmission for a rav 4 one in a heart beat.

Considering the first gen RAV 4 had a 3S-FE/3S-GE and a BEAMs in Japan, I'd assume that it would look a lot like ours. Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if it was an E15xF trans. Haha.

Right, which those engines have 4 cylinder front port exhaust exit. The v6 has 3 cylinders exit in the rear.

Oh lol, I forgot we were talking about using the 2mz and was just thinking about the Rav4 trans working. laugh.gif

Alright so heres what I came up with in the past 10 minutes of research haha.

So someone is mating a EA61 trans to a 2MZ but...its a lot of custom fab and hes still not done yet. That and the EA61 is FWD. Although they do make a EA6XF for the RAV4s (3rd gen) that mounts up to the 2GRs. So that might be a possibility. On the plus side its a TINY trans. But the gear ratios are wack.

Links-

EAXX Info
EA61 + 2MZ

So yea I'd say all that's a no go. Too much work to have an awd 2mz. Just go find a wrecked 2GR AWD RAV4 and swap the motor and trans in laugh.gif
