Safest Top Speed - 6G Celicas Forums

Say I wanna find the top speed in my ST. It's an automatic, so I don't have as many options for some things.. but after I'm in the highest 'gear', how high should I let the RPM's get before I slow down? Should I let it get so close as to redline, or 6000? Or something lower?

If you actually get to that point without getting pulled over, your car won't go to 6000 rpm's in OD, which is your final gear in your automatic st. You could just forget the guesswork and experimentation and search for other threads that deal with stating the top speed of your car. Should be around 110-125, depending on year.

my car hits the speed limiter at 115mph while only at about 4200rpm

but i rarely go faster than 80, even if im racing someone, i try to always shut down at 80 for two reasons

1.less of a ticket if i get caught and its easier to slow down.

2.screwing up at 80 is bad enough, but at 115 it will be a whole hell of a lot worse

mechanically, my car could probably go to 130, maybe 135(auto st)

power wise it will get there no problem, im at the limiter and back down to a sane speed in less than a minute.

I've had mine up to a little over 125 on the 4-lane just outside of town. I couldve gone higher but i got scared and decided to slow it down. Not worth the risk of a ticket or death so... i keep it under 90 these days. >wink.gif>
171 while using NOS in 7th gear!

I wouldnt recommend going over 110

The GT doesn't quit at 125, the limiter comes in. BTW, you should get your ECU taken in, the limiter is off now. I did 130 yesterday, I think I could've gone a teeny bit higher...135 maybe?

My ST doesnt have the limiter. Unless my speedometer is off, which i dont think it is, then i was doin 125. I know whatcha mean about F+F Andason...not very realistic, but i still liked both of em.
Could have been the new ricey style... You never know.

I've been to 138 in my ST. But that's going by the speedometer that says I'm doing 100 when I pass speed signs that say I'm going 96. I'd guess I 'actually' hit about 130. But then again I have a manual, and still had about 300 rpms untill redline. The auto might top out a little differently. Also, this was when my Celi still had less than 100k on it, it now has 196k. Almost time for a swap(don't want to get rid of an engine that still has life in it).
Man, you don't have enough horsepower to go that fast...sorry!

Probably downhill...my Celi only had 24000 miles when I bought it in 2002 and it barely went past 100...it took ages to get that fast.

Is yours slow until the turbo spools up or is it fast from a stop?

I looked up the stats for an NA celi:
Toyota 1.8 ST 114BHP Top Speed of 124 0-60 in 10
Toyota 2.0 GT 173BHP Top Speed of 139 0-60 in 7.9

Not to say that these couldnt be surpassed going downhill or w/ small performance mods, but unless you have turbo i doubt youre gonna be goin much faster than this.

no way in hell can an ST dream to see 130. 120 is kinda pushing it for ST's.

back in the old days with my GT i did 123mph.

i tried not to long ago and did 143mph with a pasenger and a few hundred rpm left. the car was still accelarting but i didnt have the guts.
when i pushed my 94 gt i hit alittle over 130 mph with some room to go

Driving a 5SFTE and LOVIN IT!!!!!!http://www.myspace.com/17psicelica<-- celica engine build pics
I really believe that an ST doesn't have enough engine to push those 2,500+ pounds all the way up to 120 mph...it may get there but it's after minutes. My ST climbed to 80 in a heartbeat and from there took an eternity to get to 90 and to 100 it was painfully slow...took probably more than a minute. After turbocharging it, at only 3 PSI with a blown turbo the car rocketed to 120 so fast I got nervous, haha...and it also torque steered to the left. >tongue.gif>

Don't know where you're getting the 2500 pound figure. It's more like 2300. But either way, even my old 85 GTS could get up over 100 like it was nothing(22RE put out the same 115 hp as the 7AFE, with a tad more torque, and to the rear wheels). Sure it's forever compared to something like an RX-7 or Supra, but it will get there.
We've had this discussion on this board as well as on Celica.net many times. The ST gears(manual trans) top out at 138. So believe what you want, but I've been there and know better.

yea my car torque steers left every time i shift into a higer gear while under boost.

i think im gonna try removing my st's limiter and see what it can do.

im sure it will still be accelerating even at 130mph
