Ah yes, carbonic acid. Perhaps a mix of carbonic and acetic acid.

Mmmmm fish and chips...

Stop it, I am getting hungry now. biggrin.gif

Never tried mixing them up? Knowing my luck it would create either a super acid and there would be nothing left, or a small explosion....same end result.

Phosphoric acid, that was the other. Sodas have small amounts of phosphoric acid and carbonic acid. Vinegar is acetic acid. I don't think anyone has ever died from eating pickles and drinking soda at the same time so I'd imagine all three in a decent amount all together would make for a good rust stripper that's safe to handle.

Think I will just stick to the Deox C smile.gif

I have used the phosphoric acid product sold by Home Depot (can't remember its name off the top of my head -- will get it for you if you need it cause it came in a gallon and I still have much of it left). I thought it did an excellent job taking the rust down to bare metal in reasonable time. I used heavy duty gloves and was very careful because of its activity, almost like a major acid. Maybe it was concentrated, but I don't remember. All I remember is that it worked well and I would love to get my hands on some of that DEOX C Nial uses to compare it with. He seems to have great results.

Drink it?. . . No way!
They're so delicious though. redface.gif

The project may never get finished now.

As from the 8th Jan a small human being will call me Dad! smile.gif

See if I can juggle a baby and a project build.

Congratulations!

it's just going to slow you down. Might have less money and will have less time. I still had time to work on projects when my son was born, just had to fit it in when I was awake enough to function.
It's not safe to juggle babies, they're like fragile and stuff. redface.gif

Could be a new craze?

Probably not, plus your wife might hit you with a frying pan.

Dash finally back and freshly alcantara'd

Rear suspensin fitted and the brakes sorted

Tank....dont know if i will fit the OEM tank guard or make some kind of defuser?

Hmmmmmmmmstill shiny and new smile.gif

My Facebook GT4 Build page.https://www.facebook.com/groups/GT4Rebuild
We'll, in typical "me" fashion I am jot happy with the alcantara dash, I recon I could do a better job myself, so I have purchased some proper alcantara from Germany! some 3M contact adhesive and my mums sewing skills, I will procure a new dash and spend a few days at my folks house doing the job to my standards.

I have also managed to find some fake carbon fibre matting to make a new tank guard to replace the crappy standard one, it will also allow my to more easily fit some kind of defuser under the rear of the car.

I have a load of parts to send off to the zinc platers.....again.

With the news that I am expecting a daughter in the new year a large sum of my "engine" fund had magically disappeared and turned itself into baby clothes, furniture and general decorating tools. As a result I we be rebuilding my old 3sgte engine up which I am kind of pleased about, it's a good engine and I have high expectations of it.

I had the front wings from the GT media blasted, although one of them had a parking ding so I have ordered a new one from Toyota, the new wing will be media blasted and painted with the blue ultra tough primer before having the inside coating in stone guard to help keep rust at bay.

Work on the GT4 will then grind to a halt for a couple of weeks while I finish breaking the GT up, I need the driveway cleared so I can get the faff out of the garage. I have bought some wall mounted heaters which I need to install so that the garage will become a heated spray booth smile.gif it also needs a clean and I will instal a new ceiling to help stop dirt falling on the new paint smile.gif

So all in all loads to do but looking forward to it......nearing the final stages now, just the interior to finish, exterior to finish and an engine to build........a turbo to find, cooling system to make, expansion tank to make, radiator to design ....oh and an exhaust to build.......that reminds me, I need to learn to weld aluminium......anyone have any advise on doing this?

WOW, This is probably one of the best builds I have seen so far! so much effort on the details truly an artisan!
Upholster the baby seat in alacantra
Took a break from car stuff today to focus on my other passion, aircraft. (I went through university studying aeronautical engineering) On this occasion the mighty AVRO Vulcan bomber, a Cold War Bomber that has fighter like manoeuvrability.

This is its final year displaying before it gets permanently grounded.

There is a famous quote by a visiting potential buyer in the 50s when the UK was marketing then Vulcan bomber to other countries.

After watching the Vulcan display the General looked visibly disappointed and remarked that "it was a bit slow for a fighter" smile.gif

are you going to paint it yourself too? or someone else. is engine there yet?

Learned a lot in 10 years...I hardly log in anymore, last loginToday Sept 6 2019, and I was forced just to clarify a post. LOLIf you PM me and I dont respond, dont fret or cry. Im alive, better post your questions in the thread below, maybe I log back in2grfe Swapped...Why I chose the 2GR, before you ask read here...A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within.@llamaraxing in Instagram is the best way to find me. I hardly log here anymore.
Wow its been a while since I read this thread. I'm caught up now - fantastic progress. It would be faster if you stopped when parts had been refurbished rather than rebuilding them to at least new standards, but that level of dedication is going to make this car truly a sight to behold when finished, and for many (many, many, many...) years to come.

And of course, congratulations on the dad news! Exciting times biggrin.gif

Good luck, and I really hope that nothing gets in your way from finishing this! smile.gif

Edit: Also, have you looked much into the new alarms yet? I was looking at doing a Viper PKE with remote start in my MX5 early next year.

Yes I will be painting it myself too. smile.gif another thing to learn. The engine is still in the garden smile.gif it will be sent away for a rebuild in a month or two when I can afford the £4000 ($6200) rebuild cost.

I'm shocked you're not doing it yourself
I'm currently learning lots about paining car parts with my hybrid GT-4 bumper. things I learned about include: sand, prime, sand. Wet sanding is my new best friend, how awesome 2000 and 3000 grit sand paper plus polishing compound can be on a fresh clear coat finish. also how addictive and time consuming it can be to polish out all the imperfections to get that mirror finish. I also learned that the edges of the painted area and clear coat need to be prepped. I have a clear coat line and a bit of a mess on the edge of my painted area. the clear coat isn't sticking because I didn't prep that area. may just live with it for now. This probably won't be a problem on your car as your paining the whole thing.

Cheers smile.gif I havnt looked into alarms yet, although I do like Toad alarms but may get something different.

My new semi industrial sewing machine arrived today, so all being well, in a couple of weeks I can start learning upholstery and cover the dash to the standard I think it should have been done smile.gif

Well the past few months has been hell.........my soon to be born daughter had an extra scan after we thought there may be problems, turns out everything was okay. Then my Dad was diagnosed with cancer, he died about two months later on the 28th Oct with his son holding his hand. It's a terrible thing to watch your Dad die and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. fortunately we managed to get him home for one night before he went. His funeral is on Monday, the hearse is a motorbike and sidecar, which pretty much sums up my Dad. I will miss him for the rest of my days and hope he looks out for his granddaughter. Life will never be the same.

Anyway, it has made me have a different outlook on life, I am learning the guitar and saxophone. I don't know if I will have anymore time or enthusiasm for this project anymore. I hope I do as I would love to get it finished, I will give it a few months and see how I feel.

As a side note, today I bought a pushchair......it cost more than my first car, what's going on there???

I've read about the situation on Facebook.
I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm sure he's proud of you.

That's too bad about your dad. My mom suddenly died a few years ago. She never got to see my finished movie. That kind of thing can re-focus your life and priorities. Your attention to detail on this project has been inspirational so thanks for sharing.
Nial: I have read your thread a while back and today I logged back on. Your build is incredible and was inspiring for many of us. I am very sorry to hear about your dad's passing. I was standing next to mine when he looked at me one last time and then closed his eyes for ever. I was only 17 then but still remember that moment as it just happened. It is true that life changes afterwards. My dad had leukemia. Life goes on.

I can assure you that he would have wanted you to finish this build. Take some time off, take care of the baby and wife. Then come back to it.

Awesome build and will wait for you to enlighten us with your attention to detail.

thanks for sharing with us all your hard work!
