short shifter installed - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #22975 280 posts Started by Batman722
Thanks to Doug and rjb23 for experimenting with other short shifters (Doug-EVO and rjb23-7th gen). I recieved mine (7th gen about $45 on ebay) and installed. It took about 1.5 hours from start to finish. I downloaded the instructions from TWMs website and read the ones in the how to articles.

I have to say the throw is much much shorter and about 1-2 inches lower than stock. My finger are kinda close to the dash but I think it is because I only used 2 of the 4 spacers (the back 2) plus I have big hands. I will put some pics up when I put the other 2 spacers in.

Bottom line, this this rocks - great mod for $45.

batman, would it be possible for you to post pictures of how low it is and how close to the dash the shifter is in gear? Im assuming when you say its close you mean when its in 1st, 3rd, 5th gear.

This sounds like a great mod that i want to do in the future.

Its Orville's Celica, i just drive it...
I just put the other 2 spacers in. It is perfect. I will take some pics tonight and post (I am at work now). I am definatly happy about his mod.

Pics to come...

Wanna drive to Washington so I can see how it feels? >tongue.gif>

Since I posted up that information, I've been curious as to how an EVO or seventh gen shifter feels compared to my TRD quickshifter.

New Toyota project coming soon...

did you have to dremel ?

Yuo only have to dremle if you do the lancer one. its cheaper and comes with a knob.. but you have to dremle/sand down..

Also mine is no ware near or close to hitting my hand >confused.gif>

I think we owe more credit to Coomer for thinking of this. >wink.gif> an then me for trying.. >biggrin.gif>

It feels a bit stiffer than stock and I have heard people use the term "more precise" and I have to agree, definatly more precise.

pictures are so sexy.
so you just followed the install as if it was a twm shifter? no other mods necessary?

and it feels better/shorter throws?
how could anyone justify an extra $100 for a twm shift? or 100+ for trd?

which shifter did you buy? a no name one?

Now Digndoug and Rjb23 said you had to cut a piece of plastic
did you cut it?

I think they were talking about that piece. The GREEN ARROW

I didn't cut mine and it's smooth. I might hack it out tomorrow and see if there is a difference...

I know for the lancer one you def need top, unless you spaced the housing a lot higher. Its all really depends on how high it is sitting so if it is or not bending the shift linkage. If it shifts smothly and you dont have to use much pressure, Only little more then stock, it should be fine. Mine was a BIA in 1st 3rd an 5th.. I mean it was hard to put into gear.
OK just to be safe I cut mine and didn't feel a difference. It still feels smooth.

Doug and rjb23, did you take out the stock rubber spacers on the assembly ? I did when I put the new spacers on. That might be the problem...

You need the spacers to lift the assembly so the shift linakage dosnt bend or hit. I learned this the hard way, by testing and testing. Also i did the evo one which was a bit more work. Also you will need to cut some plastic tabs on the shift linkage to make it shift smother.

there are stock spacers in your car now. I took those out and replaced them with the new ones. Those are nessessary. I did cut the plastic piece that Doug is talking about a day later, I felt no difference cut/uncut, there was no rubbing at all - I just wanted to be safe.

no, it didn't. So what you do is...
for the clip, either use the old one or buy a clip at a hardware store that looks like this

one will probably cost about $ .25

for the cup remover, just use a pair of pliers >wink.gif> just don't squeeze the plastic cup too hard and crush it. I had no problem getting the cups off and then back on the new shifter.
