Thanks to those who did the R&D, i just installed the 7th gen Short shifter (bought from ebay for ~40 shipped) worked like a charm, everything is in working great and the shifts feel much better! THANKS!

When you all changed your shifters, did you see if you would be able to pour transmission fluid in there? i want to change my fluid and im going to install the shifter soon, just wondering

Transmission fluid goes into the transmission in the engine bay.
The shifter is linked to the transmission by 2 shift linkages.
There is nothing under the shifter base.

Any preferred kits off ebay?

Any to be avoided?

racing_guys have some for $15 plus $13 shipping, but their info is sparse and in poor english.

Please post auction pics of what you have and whether you like or dislike the quality, etc.

i tried to get an answer like that b4 but didn't get any luck. they just said get the cheapest one possible. i just ordered mine and can't wait to get it in. i will let you know how it worked out for me when i am done

Call me a traitor! See if I care. ;)
I noticed that some say steel and some say aluminum. Assuming the descriptions are remotely accurate, would an aluminum shift rod be a concern(as far as durability)?

I hope this doesn't come across as rude, but there's several examples (linked pics / ebay auctions etc) already in this thread. We have know way of knowing if every-single-unit out there will work. What we do know is that most the ones do (in fact, we theorize that all of them should... we just don't know for sure). Take a look at the examples already given with pictures of units we know work, and compare them to the unit you're interested in purchasing. It's also a good idea to ask the seller about their return policy.

PS: In the 4th page of this thread is an ebay link I made:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Short-Shift...1QQcmdZViewItem

and has some of the best pictures further down the thread.

Most of the ebay links are dead, I think only the purple ones are active still. Not many people have posted about experience with specific seller/kits, at least not definitively so.

THere is one member who I will pm to ask abut their experience.

so does anyone notice any difference in the ebay shortshifter for the 7th gen vs. the trd shifter for the 6th gen? other than the price of course. are these shorter(ebay) just looking for recommendations from ppl who have done either or both. thanks

The TRD one is a whole assembly, whereas the 7th gen short shifters you see people on here use is just the shifter shaft. Personally, I'll save the $150 dollars and buy the shaft on Ebay for $25. I'll be buying one today or tomorrow, along with the TRD knob, so I'll post pics whenever I get it installed.
i cant get past step nine on those directions. the pin will not come out or budge. i just sprayed some WD-40 to try to loosen it up so im guna try again later, but any suggestions? anyone else have this problem?

hey I'm wanting to do this to my Celica. Quick problem though. i tried to get those instructions but they ended coming up as some weird code on my computer. So I was wondering if there was some other way to do get them?

Oh and wat was that plastic thing you guys are talking about cutting? Most of the pics on this thread are gone as well as the Ebay links..
you have to get like a longer piece of metal to get that on little bar out that goes through the shifter assembly to get the top part of it off.....the short throw shifter should come with an extra pin...i know i sat out there for a good 20 minutes just tryin to get that damn pin out but it does come out and thats how the top part of it comes off

I bought a short shifter off racing_guys on ebay. it works fine. it was incredibly difficult putting it in and and took around 4 hours (partly due to inexperience and two small parts got lost. one was found but the clip connecting the L-shape to the shift linkage wasn't so we put in a small nail and bent it to fit). it feels kinda stiffer but works and it makes a bunch of noise when i shift. like "clunk-clunk" with every shift. lol. I'm just a lil worried about the noise...anyone know wat may be causing it?

Take a pic of the step you're on for us... I just did this before winter; and it was a PITA!!

This is just my rant and doesn't have any relevance to your problem, whatthe:
The 7th Gen shifter had bigger "balls" and I had to dremel them down while maintaining the roundness of them in order to fit back into the connectors. Also another thing I've noticed is that the shifter might throw shorter and feel a lot better/stiffer, but its really close to the handbrake now (in first and second gear), and is still just as "tall" as the stock shifter... has anyone chopped theirs down at all?

Anyways, whatthe; get back to me, or repost the link to the walkthrough and I'll try to help you out as best as I can. tongue.gif

yeh i got it all done, but i didnt go through with the installation the 7gen short shifter i had the 2 ball parts where the rubber balls from the stock were suppose to go to the short shifter didnt fit right. It was about 3mm too small and it was very loose. So i ended up putting everything back the way it was. Good learning experience tho, now taking it apart is a breeze

could I ask why none is using the TRD 6gen short shifter?

too expensive, harder to find, and virtually the same in looks and length. kinda like 404 sides and TRD sides.

I bought mine for 15 bucks, TRD shifter assembly is way over 100 even used.
