1996 Toyota Celica SS-III progress thread (NZ Celica) - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #59233 154 posts Started by delusionz
Yep! I decided to buy it, Yes it is an SS-III, No it doesn't have Beams.

It had 74,480 Kms on the odometer when I took the keys today,

What's it got?
SS-III side skirts
Super Strut Suspension
Front & Rear Strut bars
3S-GE motor, Non VVT-i
16 Inch Factory Toyota wheels, 215/50R16
3 Spoke Steering Wheel
Auto A/C electronic climate control unit
Modern JDM tail lights
Modern JDM front bumper
Modern 3 Post spoiler

What it doesn't have?
Beams motor
White interior
Airbags
Front and rear splitters
red splash interior carpet (mines blue splash)
Sunroof frown.gif
extra knob on driver seat which remembers the driving position of the back rest

It's an amazing upgrade from the '95 SS-I so I'm going to post pictures in this thread and list the things I do to it in time. I got a few things in mind which I'll list later on.

congrats on the III man, i love mine, but you have a real BLMZF, mine is a BLP(M)ZF. P is for auto, M is for manual. love that color. what are your plans with it?

right now I remeber who you are.

this will help you biggrin.gif SS-III magic

looking at that, you already have a few ideas in motion biggrin.gif

My shopping list at this point in time is:

pod filter (bought that today) - mine was destroyed in the crash but I still have the old ram pipe, i haven't noticed if the mouth of the TB 3" or 2.5", i might need a new silicone joiner and some 77ml clamps.
4x ngk iridium bkr6eix
oil and filter change
coolant change
head unit
decat pipe

i have a blowby catch tank and 6" 85W door speakers from my last celica to install,
i want to paint my rocker cover and intake manifold red, blue led cluster and climate control and ingition ring perhaps....
eventually get trd plug leads, ss3 splitters, 2 post wing...

I'll add a few ideas
cambelt or was that done recently?
new spark plug leads? (I went TRD biggrin.gif)
speakers front and rear?

painting ACIS manifold red? hmm check my pic out you might want to change your mind

ST202 SS-II CELICA threadNew Zealand members check inSticky thread's: How to contribute and troubleshoot.
Mmmmmm yeah those TRD leads look good, Okay I'm adding that -- to the bottom though as it's not cheap and has minuscule bang for buck, but they do look great.

cambelt for sure, but I have a few kms yet to put that off. I don't have many pennies left as of today frown.gif

I see what you've done with your pod filter. You've used the stock rubber pipe and blocked off the hole where your resonator connected getting around a problem i'm about to face,
I have a short ram pipe with 1 vacuum nipple on it from my old celica... on this new motor the stock pipe has 2 vacuum nipples for some other system connected to it so i'm looking all around for a T piece adaptation it needs to have 2 big nipples and 1 little nipple and i swear i had 1 i picked at Pick-A-Part i thought looked useful but i must have thrown it out and now i need it.. arghhh

Red manifold, Like my old look ----

Sporty red engine -- kinda, red yes, sporty no.

odd? mine had 1 Big for idle, and 1 small pipe going to some air speed computer for ACIS

I'm really keen to get my pod filter on but unfortunately my SRI pipe doesn't have the correct nipples on it so in the mean time I got this idea from staring at Rusty's engine for a while that I'll use a 3" plastic joiner to connect the pod filter onto the stock rubber pipe and I've pulled out the resonator box and measured the connector diameter at 52mm so I went to a home building supplies warehouse and purchased a piece of PVC plumbing pipe to fit the hole with a cap on the end. I drilled a 20mm hole in the cap to place the rubber grommet and temperature sensor from the air box.

SRI, needs different nipples to be used with 3S-GE

cheap wildcat filter, does the trick

3" joiner plastic already connected to pod filter

This is really strange, I have the same car with Super-strut, LSD, 2 pot front brakes even the clutch is different as i found out to my expence.
Also the car has close ratio gearbox.
So why is my code BLMVF.

SS-III was introduced in 1995 or 1996 I think, You just have an optioned out SS-II

I think I did something similar today, heh. Is this what you were meaning?

Now to go for a drive and see if it falls off. *cough*

Hehe It looks exactly the same, I haven't taken a photo yet because its cloudy and crap outside. I'm on the hunt for a 77mm PVC pipe which i can drill holes in for the vacuum lines and connect that up with my aluminum short ram pipe but all i can find is 10 metres of 80mm lol.

Man does this engine ROAR with a pod filter. I'm keen to get rid of the stock rubber pipe though, I think it gets constricted under high vacuum.

whats the wires do in the air intake pipe, because mine doesn't have that? where does it go?

you might be right, hence the reason why I want to change

The dodgy I plugged into the side with the plumbing cap? Thats the air temperature sensor that origionally plugged into the air filter box

hhmm mine must have came out (in Japan), since I dont have one? were does it go to?

ST202 SS-II CELICA threadNew Zealand members check inSticky thread's: How to contribute and troubleshoot.
No idea, I don't have the car with me at the moment as she's in getting her cam belt changed. IIRC it just joins in with a bigger mess of wires, I'm sure the car can make do without it actually being in the intake pipe but its probably hidden somewhere around that area which wont really make much of a difference since the intake air is probably just as warm as anywhere else in your engine bay

Is that really a beams motor? Looks like a typical silvertop 3sge. Mostly seen beams motors with the actual beams logo, manifold and red color scheme. I might be wrong.

it's not a beams, those weren't introduced until 1998, he has a 96, same same but newer than mine by a year. just your standard 3rd gen 3sge.

umm 97 wasn't it? (late changes)

ST202 SS-II CELICA threadNew Zealand members check inSticky thread's: How to contribute and troubleshoot.
according to this, toyota started putting in the beams in december of '97. i've always considered anything after september to be the next model year, ie a car built in december of 97 would be considered a 98.

whats that for?

ST202 SS-II CELICA threadNew Zealand members check inSticky thread's: How to contribute and troubleshoot.
Look to the left of your ACIS manifold, notice 2 nozzles pointed at eachother joined with a small black hose? The plastic one on the left (PCV Valve or positive crankcase ventilation valve) flows oil vapour which is forced out by intense crankcase pressure into the one on the right the ACIS manifold and through the entire intake system to be burned with the air and fuel.

Burning oil is good for lowering octane, reducing engine power and sludging the inside of the manifold.

A blow-by catch tank connects between the two and catches the oil before it enters the manifold.

Even after 1 drive exposing the motor to some 1st and 2nd gear WOT operation the tank has enough golden oil in it to cover a large frying pan for bacon and eggs.

This is the 2nd cheapest/easiest modification after a pod filter

sweet, something else I can do, although I might put it on the left side of the engine bay (so I don't have heaps of piping) were did you get that from?

Is it quite easy to replace dash lights?
I want to put bright white ones in, also have to do my ignition ring maybe my cigarette lighter (even though i never use it)

ST202 SS-II CELICA threadNew Zealand members check inSticky thread's: How to contribute and troubleshoot.
Catch tank is bout $50 or $60, You'll need to get your own oil hose for it as the one provided with the tank is too thin and small, it constricts and probably melts, stupid chinese stuff. Can get it from Super Cheap Auto or Repco.

The dash is pretty simple, theres a long plastic trim piece over the steering wheel and ignition ring u just pull out and it exposes all the screws u need to unscrew, 8 in total to pull out the gauge cluster... 4 along the top trim piece and 4 on the gauge cluster... just carefully pull it out and then squeeze out the 3 wiring harness clips... the 3 biggest bulb holders are the ones for the background colour... its a 12v source so LED's need to be resistored. So just buy the direct replacement bulbs from that site, its the T10's (direct replacement for Type 194) u want for the gauge cluster and the little T5's (direct replacement for Type 74/75) for your glove box, ignition ring, coin holder, cigarette lighter ring, the small warning lights in the gauge cluster...... Its very easy (5 minute job) once u know where every snap and screw is, and theyre mostly obvious... TBH your rear speaker installation is a dog of a job compared to this
