3sge Beams into 98 GT - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #67351 164 posts Started by 2bcelica
I've seen a few post with some details for this swap, but not specific enough to give me a direct answer.

I know a few have successfully done this swap and now its my turn to ask for help.

I have a 98 Manual GT and wanted to know if there are any parts or anything I need to look out for when doing this swap.

I will be picking up this Beams next Monday. The harness, ecu, air flow meter, header, shifter, fuel pump, axles, and tranny are included in this set.

Does the harness need to be rewired to work or is it just plug and play?

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks
i believe you need motor ecu speedo tranny and axle's and prob some more items but yeah. why not just go with the 3sgte?

2015 Subaru WRX. World Rally Blue/Black2001 Honda S2000. Spa Yellow/Black
got the speedo. Price and convenience was a playing factor in choosing the beams. I saved on shipping because it was a local sale. Beams setup allows me to use the exisitng axle and tranny where as the 3sgte i would have to get a stronger tranny and axle. I like the red top look. The beams gives enough power for now.
s that was the surpise you were talkin bout

Yep - picking it up Monday -
dam from jhot? i wanted to pick it up next month lol

it should be fun, i too want to go the n/a route this time
3rd/4th gen 3sge tranny have a higher final drive but they are all s54 transmissions.

Anybody know the top speed for 2.2 ltr gt celica vs a 3rd/4th gen 3sge.

Im glad you going with beams swap. its a rare engine and i have that engine in mind when i come to do my swap. you been researching that engine from http://www.beams-redtop.com/redparts.htm

you find any headers for it. beams wasn't given that much aftermarket support like it should have...

you would need custom a/c lines and power steering i think??

You can't order any replacement parts for it if your in the states though right ?? Cause those numbers don't come up on 1sttoyota or toyotaworld.

wow, cool to see that beams is going to something good...

that website will link you to a forum, if i recall, there is a guy that can get the parts from new zealand. I want to do this mod for a while. but no money,

talk to outsider, he did the swap. dont know if he still has the car....

Learned a lot in 10 years...I hardly log in anymore, last loginToday Sept 6 2019, and I was forced just to clarify a post. LOLIf you PM me and I dont respond, dont fret or cry. Im alive, better post your questions in the thread below, maybe I log back in2grfe Swapped...Why I chose the 2GR, before you ask read here...A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within.@llamaraxing in Instagram is the best way to find me. yup no problem 2bcelica. Hmm not sure Remy, about the whole ordering factory parts for the engine works all in those beams forums.

yes outsider did the swap a few years ago. Also check this out http://www.southerncarcustoms.com/GS_Projects.htm
there is a guy who did beams swap and also that white celica that did the 3sgte swap he looks familiar from pics here on 6gc. who is that guy. and also dr tweak did a swap on a 92 gt celica with beams in it. So that makes it 2 beams in the u.s. for sure. could be some more we don't know about???

check out maikl profile. he has some really nice headers. but it doesnt list what kind they are. he what got me inspired to considering the beams engine.

Just got the beams today. Looks great and in very good condition. Pics are a bit dark. Will be working on it soon and will be in touch with Dr. Tweak for the harness conversion. Can't wait to get everything completed.

Congrats..... wink.gif

The header is a two piece unit, make sure you got both parts.
Did you get the cat that bolts on the end of the header?
Do you have the gauges? You will need the tach.

I still have the car. It is still running like a top.
I have never had any trouble what so ever.

Yeah I got the bottom part of the header and the tach too. Did Tweak do ur harness also, or did u do it yourself? Any thing I should look out for when attempting this? Thanks
you lucky sob. I envy you. But im glad we have another member doing a beams swap. since everyone always goes for turbo setup or 3sgte.!! cant wait till you get it done. I might even have to drive down to texas someday to check it out. CONGRATS!!!

I did my harness (past avionics tech experience).
It did throw me for a loop though. After everything was installed, It would not start. I traced it back to a non-existant but required jumper under the fuse box in the engine bay. It was something I missed when doing my wiring. If I remember corectly, I only had to cut about 4 or 5 wires and lengthen them. Mechanically, parts will bolt into place.

yo outsider. you have a vid of your beams swap in action. you still have kmh gauge or mph gauge conversion.

Do you have lsd on your car??? how many miles does your engine have

i haven't start work on the beams yet cause of other obligations, but I was wondering and I'm sure i'll find out when I do work on it --- are all the plugs and wiring scheme the same? since you mentioned that you only had to lengthen only about 4-5 wires. I have a copy of the beams wiring diagram and 5sfe diagram, but haven't looked into it yet, since i know i'm going to forget unless I'm doing it while looking at the diagram at the same time.
You have a BEAMS harness and it will plug into the same spot under the fuse box.

Looks like I will have to rebuild the links to the pics in the old install posts on this forum.

Had some time to take things apart. So far there are a few items that needs to be replaced.

1) Clutch -- old one was really shot
2) Fly wheel - or resurfaced
3) Waterpump - Timing Belt
4) Thermostat

I will be cleaning up the engine block and tranny to prep it for paint. I wanted to paint the block and tranny gold, but the parts store didn't have any gold (closest thing was yellow), so I decided to go with a different theme. Superman colors - Blue and red - Not sure how this would turn out, but hope it'll look good in the engine bay. The header heat shield will be silver.

Here are some pics of progress. Not much to look at though.

nice to finally see a BEAMS engine with the cover off

please dont, someone had painted the whole engine red (but with a 3rdgen 3sge) it look wrong (putting it the nicest way I can) the engine looks tidy just the way it is.

tell me where you get the parts for the engine. this is one hell of a thread....

The existing red is staying red on the valve cover and the intake manifold. I agree, I love the red where it is. the block will be blue, but after everything is put together the blue won't be that noticeable I don't think cause the header heat shield (which will be gray silver) kinda covers up most of the blue that you can see. Working on it right now. Taking a break to wait for the paint to dry a bit.

I'll be getther the OEM parts at a local dealer since they are able to get JDM parts. Their price is about the same as 1sttoyotaparts.com just about $3-$10 higher, but I save on shipping - although I have to pay tax.

Will be posting pics of the paint soon enough.

it looks nicer in person . From the pic it looks weird that every thing is blue, but imagine with the red of the valve cover on and intake manifold along with the silver of the head shield - might not be too bad. Thats enough for tonight. Will continue working on it when I get the free time again or when I get the parts needed.

Another guy on here, who is also a local in my area was working on his beams and was going for the iron man theme, which I thought was cool - so I guess its SuperMan vs. IronMan. Sorry I'm a marvel comics geek.
I think the beams swap is a lot cheaper and less headache for a lot of us ST guys because we basically have nothing in terms of axels, transmisson, shift linkage and that needed passenger mount.
hmm blue block. painting the tranny gold wouldnt be a bad idea if ya still plan on doing it. It might just look good when you put the engine and everything back together. painting different parts of the engine never came into mind when i thought of engine swaps.

so you going straight through a toyota dealer huh? how is that so. I also thought you could not order red top engine parts from 1sttoyotaparts. (or atleast thats what some people where saying)

how are you going about putting everything back on the car. how about when using a torque wrench, how do you know how many pounds the flywheel needs, or the valve cover, or the top of the engine to the block? You have a manual? do you just use the same specs as far as torqueing down stuff off the 5s-fe motor.

Your sticking with stock headers im assuming.

BTW i'm liking your carbon fiber garnish license plate thing. w/e its called. it looks nice
