1MZ-FE into my MR2 - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #77116 692 posts Started by 95CelicaST
Went back to the dyno today and have some good news... and some bad news to my wallet.

Ran better - got MUCH better numbers and the chart looks healthier... but only for my first run. After the car warmed up it performed like dog sh*t again. It is now running full rich (before it was lean), and it is really limiting my power potential. My tuner said we're just fighting the ECU at this point, and it needs to go. He pitched a LinkG4 Atom standalone to me and I am going to go down that road hopefully next month.

Here is the dyno chart. They cut the first run short (red), and the second run tanked. So did the third, and so we let it cool down for a while... and the last run we got what you can see in blue. You can see the AFR drops off rich really early... and look at what it did to my chart.

So standalone ECU coming in the next month or so, and we'll have some better numbers then. Just imagine what the specs might be if that first run would just continue to run up through the rest of the RPM range.

le sigh... ALMOST there!

Well Mr. Two is going under the knife on Tuesday for a week or so. My Christmas present to the car is a Link G4 Atom ECU.

Got this picture from my tuner this evening. He said it idles like silk... and that I might be able to pick it up Friday night!

Looks like final numbers are 185hp 201tq. I'll post up the chart in a few.

Bam. Worst dyno run vs final... granted the first one is with a major vac leak.

That's a lot of torque for an MR2. I bet passing traffic will be the most fun you can have without buying a ticket.

Oh sweet baby Jesus...

So I went and picked up the car... and I need to replace my rear pads and get my wheel re-balanced. Apparently on their test drive one of my rear driver's side caliper bolts fell out and the caliper fell off the rotor - burning through the pad and the caliper took all of the wheel weights off. Joyous. They got a bolt and put it back on for me, though smile.gif I'll take it to Discount Tire and have them do it, since it's free.

I took it for a little shakedown run down the street, onto the highway, and back... and this thing is scary fast, but the power delivery is buttery smooth. The moment you apply any pressure to the pedal the torque is there pushing you back into the seat and you have it all the way to 6,000 RPM. The Link ECU has a rev limiter entry for however high you want so Drift-Office put the limiter at a little past 6K RPM. It can certainly keep going, but you're not making any more power, so there wasn't any point to it.

Plus now I have a nice tach sweep on power up, which makes me feel special rolleyes.gif

that's a nice power curve + the instant torque must make it a blast.
Respectable numbers.

Nice A/F ratio !

So a couple months have passed. Nothing new. Daily driving it and enjoying it fully.

Modifications have pretty much come to a halt on it. Still doing preventative maintenance when needed. I still need to get up underneath and replace the driver side axle and output shaft seal, but it's either been too cold to work on it, or raining.

Saving up funds now to buy a new car in a few months. Not saying what it is at this point as it probably won't be the FR-S/BR-Z

I inadvertently drove this car I am planning on buying, and fell in love with it's auto transmission.

Sadly I toss around on a daily basis to keep the MR2 as weekend status, or sell it... or pull a few of the expensive items off and sell it. Sigh...

I might not. I'm just kind of exploring all of my options. The car I want is going to be ~28K, so the closer I can get with a down payment (with a couple grand set aside for insta-modifications wink.gif ) the better. I figure if I saved up for the next two months and sold the MR2 for around 9k (would remove the seats probably) I could have a 15K down payment. Besides, all the MR2 would do is sit in my garage for show season to come around every year. It would be a disservice to the car. It deserves to be driven.

9K would be in the event of a quick sale, guys. Last year at a car show some older gentleman offered me 12K. I told him to wait until after the car was finished. wink.gif

nice car! i was close to doing a v6 3vzfe swap into my 91na (had a donor 92 es300 5spd on standby), but settled for a 96 gen3 3sgte instead. on a v6 standpoint, the 1mz is way better.
Car show tomorrow. Picked up some sweet Chemical Guys products today and got to work.

Wash, dry, clay bar, two coats of JetSeal109, followed by a coat of 5050 concours limited edition (can 461 of 2000)

Thats really nicely done, looks to be immaculate, wheel design looks to be very compatible with the car and has a great stance too, making me wanna go out and buy one for a project myself now.

Thought about the Redline Goods suede dash and center console, but realistically you're sticking fabric on your dash that is going to fade and will be a nightmare to clean. I'll stick with my OEM dash.

Little update for yous kids.

Sold my TRD X-brace. It was hanging out in my living room and wasn't ever going to be reinstalled since the V6 intake manifold hits it - even with spacers on the strut tops. Meh. Proceeds will go towards my next purchase...

This guy will end up adorning my steering column in a couple weeks:
