1MZ-FE into my MR2 - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #77116 692 posts Started by 95CelicaST
im very veryy tempted to do this same swap, theres a red mr2 sitting in a driveway near my gfs house begging for attention! car looks great man, it must have good pick up with all that instant torque!

st205 powered ss3 coupe
After driving the FRS for a couple weeks, getting into the MR2 feels like climbing into a gokart... And it moves like it, too. I took both cars to a car show two weeks ago. I had my friend drive the MR2 and I drove the FRS. We switched cars halfway there because he was afraid he was going to destroy the front lip... and I forgot just how fast the MR2 is from a stop or roll. There is more torque to the wheels at 2000RPM (~175) than the FRS is rated at peak (151@6400rpm). The MR2 flys!

Some shots from that show (These are linked to FB, so if people can't see them let me know and I'll move them)

I'm taking her in tomorrow to have a full paint correction done in preparation for a huge indoor show on the 29th. I have never been able to get aggressive enough on my polish/pad/DA polisher combo to get some of the larger imperfections out, so the shop that refinished my wheels will be fixing it while teaching me how to do it on my own... can't ask for better.

Dual throttle bodies and drive by wire if I had to take a guess.

Because I got a hell of a deal on the engine... And it still has a return style fuel system, so the swap was very easy.

MR-2 is looking damn nice!

*edit* Just noticed it's red-stitched too. Lucky a$$....Trying to find me the uber rare blue-stitched carbon fiber one.

no the VVT 1MZ still had a cable. only the 3MZ has DBW.

i think Oteck has the best setup, 3MZ with VVT 1MZ intake and TB and electronics.

Im running a 3MZ with non VVT intake manifold and TB and electronics. its still a bat outta hell.

>Early versions of the VVT-i 1MZ used a dual throttle body, cast aluminum intake manifold, and EGR block off plates on the exhaust manifolds. Later versions used an ABS plastic intake manifold to further weight reduction and decrease cost. These versions may also have drive-by-wire/electronic throttle control.

Was just going off of that.

my setup is nearly code free thanks to my Neutral resistor box but i need to kill one last code the direct clutch speed is throwing at me above 3k. It doen't do anything but i'd like to kill it
It won't be the best setup until i get the 6spd in there hehe

Wait till i do a HCR build on my 2nd block, an yes your are seeing 2 3mz hybrids

>The ACIS is working. The auto ECU thinks it's in park, so it isn't adjusting fuel trims. I think the Auto trans codes are causing the problems. The only real way to get rid of the codes is to go full standalone, which isn't really in my budget. My tuner quoted something like $2500 for a ViPEC system installed and tuned. He said that since I'm not really looking at building the car out any more than where it is now to just go with a SAFC or if I want to - Mega Squirt so that the fuel can be dialed back. I maxed out the wideband while doing the baseline, so who knows just how rich it is. Pulling back the fuel will at least net me a few more HP and better fuel economy.

Out at my house tethered to my iPhone right now, so the upload is going slow....

edit: Chart.

i have that same dip but not the one at 5500 RPMs whats that from? also you can get rid of all the codes by using a MT ECU...this is a pretty old post im sure you know all this now.

We weren't sure what exactly caused the dip, but we assumed it was either knock, or the ECU seeing a value (that we couldn't find ourselves) that we couldn't resolve. At the time of this dyno chart my only CEL was the AT speed sensor.

On the newer ECUs there is a pin that you can ground out that will put the ECU into a MT mode (I'm sure you're aware of that from MR2OC). I just said screw it and did it the proper way - with standalone EMS.

Did you or your tuner check for timing values around that RPM to see if they were linear or changed drastically? That kinda looks like a friend's old dyno chart where his timing would go from 30 degrees at around 2800 RPM to 8 degrees when the first PSI of boost hit.

Yeah I had my phone set synced to my OBD-II dongle and was monitoring timing, fuel trims (long term and short term) for both banks, etc. and then charted the values on an RPM X-axis to more or less overlay with my dyno. Timing and fuel was all within spec.

We assumed the auto ECU - despite what others say - really does seem to have issues with not seeing an auto trans.

yeah that dip is from the ACIS. thats where the throttle plate is moving

How could that be ACIS when it is gone from my standalone dyno graph, but is still hooked up?

Or are you saying that ACIS was causing the ECU to screw up.

probably because the stand alone is not sending the signal to the VSV to activate the ACIS. thats telling me that your runners are not optimum and out could gain more power.

you are really making me want another MKII. i sold mine for my Supra about 7 years ago.

tempting, what are you considering?

2001 Celica GT-S Turbo1997 Supra TT 6speed1997 Celica 3MZ/1MZ swap1990 Celica All-Trac
No idea. I know I won't get anywhere near what I have into it, and I can certainly remove expensive items to meet a price point (i.e. CF steering wheel, LinkECU, Sparco seats.. Those total over $4100 alone) but I would like to see 10K as it sits all professionally detailed and polished up, but I might entertain offers/trades +\- cash. Meh. I flip flop on this idea. If someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse I would let it go. Could always use some money to buy an AVO turbo kit for my FR-S.

If you're actually interested feel free to PM me.

Sad, always seems to happen. Build a car, sell within a year. You've a good replacement though.

The problem is that it just sits all week, and I usually only get to take it out for a ~10 mile jaunt on the weekends. It is about 50 miles away from where I live, so I can't mix it up and drive it to work one day or something. As we get closer to the car show season I will be refreshing things on it, but its pretty much done, you know? I don't want to put a cage in it, or a body kit, or put any more money into the motor, as I have a TON into it already. I was actually contemplating selling off the Sparcos for a set of clean leather MR2 seats and possibly take the interior down the classy OEM feel. It deserves to be driven, and I am not doing that as much as I should.

As I said - if someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse I would let it go. Otherwise it will stay with me and I'll keep it as a weekend/show car... like it currently is.

Understood, and agreed. Trade for me Celica, I'll drive it. My qualifications are sim practice in lift- and snap-oversteer.

Car sits beautifully as-is. I had a MR2 Turbo and it was a great car. This car should've came with a V6 from factory smile.gif If my investments weren't going into a cabin, I'd definitely be interested in purchashing this vechicle. We'll see how things go and how long you'll have this car smile.gif GL on whatever you do to this beautiful car!

I put the stock seats back in it and have been using it as my commuter for the week. I dropped $1100 at a local upholstery shop on recovering the stock seats in Katzkin leather as well as the door cards. Scheduled for Tuesday next week for installation and pics will follow.

I also picked up a gauge cluster from a local MR2 owner to cannibalize the voltmeter from, as mine is broken (reads 18+ at all times).

First car show of the year kicks off on 3/9 here in Seattle so more pictures will follow.
