so a couple of updates.

#1, the car runs and drives great, however, we have a code 54 (intercooler system) that we could not shake out.
dustin came by, and after a bit of poaking around, we determined the cause to be a bad IC coolant pump.
Jim has decided to go ahead and order an upgraded pump, especially since he plans on running the car hard, and at high boost.
dustin will also be wiring the pump to run constantly, bypassing the factory "on when on throttle"/"off after 30seconds off" system.
jim will need the recovery time the factory system will not provide in between runs.

#2 on a positive note, i started painting the GT-4 parts off of jims clip for his car last night.
as some of you know, and for those of you who dont..lol, i no longer work at maaco, so just painting the car there is no longer an option, so we decided to paint the parts in my garage.
the parts were white, jims car is electron blue pearl ,(honda B95P)so, i sanded them and preped them, then went to work, sealed the parts black, then hit them with some dupont chromabase basecoat, and the trusty old sherwin clear:

these last 2 are reflection shots. this is before wetsanding and buffing, since the parts were just painted last night. ill post more when they are done and on the car.

later today i will paint the gt-4 bumper and the forgmann lip.

I was thinking about this the other day. I think that rattle we sometimes hear at idle might caused by those loose springs, and not the throw out bearing.
That ACT clutch is really well made. Nice and beefy. I bet you wont hear a peep out of it now.

yea, art..those springs are down right scary, especially since that disk only has ~2k miles on it.

the ACT disk definetly is alot beefier like you said. hopfully it works out well, so far it feels great, we'll see how it goes once we get some miles on it and get it all broken in.

The paint looks AMAZING Manny, I cant wait to see it all back together!!!

i started fabbing up jims super huge, mega fantastic, ultra high-powered custom, one of a kind 4" intake lmao.

just kidding.

no, seriously, jim wanted a 4" intake, the guys at hux racing have made huge power with the gen 3 with basic mods, meth injection, and 4" intake, so he wanted to take a stab at it.

here is the basic idea of it, 4"filter, 4" pipe with a 4" to 3" "trumpet".
we got the metal reducer from burns stainless, cause #1, we couldnt find a 4" to 2.75" reducer in silicone, and #2 i didnt think it would be very sturdy.

a pic of the beginnings.

::edit::
i started a new topic to discuss the 4" intake deal, you can check it out here:

I've always said the bigger the volume of avaliable air between the filter and the Turbo [Intake manifold for NA cars] the better - we do it that way when we design hydraulic systems and the large bore on your intake looks to be much in excess of the volume of the runners so I say the idea makes perfect sense. The engine is only gonna take what it can hold at x psi but at least this way you are gauranteed not to starve it higher CFMs
IDK - That's the way I've always looked at it anyway.

man that was what i was planning on doing too or just doing a ice box like thingy.but its freaken big but bigger is better sometimes!!!i really gotta relocate my battery now too..
the metal reducer doesnt look that bad.. ive been to a couple semitruck shops up here and it seems like they might have a couple silicone reducer like that..ill have to double check..also like you said it might not be very sturdy.
looking at the picture it doesnt look that bad i want to see it when u finish..and the power output it gets..

they did, i figured jim would update the thread when he got home, but he hasnt, last i talked to him he loves the car, and said it feels much more solid.
we're STILL waiting on the pump from EMS powered.

i really like this one shannon took:

i posted them in the garage bodywork thread here:

I wanted to update this when I was able to get Shannon to go out and get some nice pictures, but she cant seem to get out of work early enough. By the time she gets home it dark, hopefully we will get some soon.

As for the car, I LOVE IT! It looks amazing, better than I ever truely expected. I cant believe the difference in this car! It is truly night and day. The car just feels so solid. Everything about the way the car feels screams STOCK, like that motor and tranny came from the factory that way, and god is that a nice feeling.

The trans truly surprised me. Every where you read about the E153 swap, all you hear is that it is notchy or stiff. I just thought that this is just something you had to deal with when choosing to run this transmission, but WOW was i wrong. This LSD is so smooth, it truly feels like the stock S54. I love it.

I finally got an email from EMS today, MY PUMP HAS BEEN SHIPPED! God was I happy to see that! So I assume it will be at Mannys by Friday/Saturday. Sooooooo, i can finnaly put some boost into it!!!!

I purchased the raiser blocks that came off the WRC. I didnt even know the importer had these when I purchased my clip, so i wasn't able to send them to Manny to get painted. Manny has them right now, and I will be back up there is 2 weeks to party/dyno/have a bit more work done etc. I will have a better update when I get the pump installed and get some nice driving in to really test it out. Hopefully I will be able to get some pics up as well.

GREAT JOB MANNY, DUSTIN, AND ALL WHO HAD A HAND IN THIS, IT IS AMAZING!!!! MANNY, THE CAR LOOKS AMAZING, IT REALLY DID SURPASS ANY EXPECTATIONS I HAD, I LOVE IT.....THANKS!!!!!

jim gave me his old 2nd gen motor setup for doing the swap, and he bought me a few things i needed to paint his hood and bumper.
not a bad deal, IMO! wink.gif

damn that looks sick,
sorry if u dont mind me asking.... whats the difference between a wrc st205 and a celica with a gtfour/AWD/3sgte conversion?
An ST205 is genuine and made in Japan, not legal here. A GT-4 conversion would be a copy of an ST205, aka a fake.

oh i see, thanks. just like how integra gs's can be converted into a type r.
Great work!!!!!
Well done!
Ok, I picked the car up this past weekend and had a few more things done. Manny made me a new B-pipe, fixed the pump (turns out the pump was fine, just a cut wire in the loom), painted the raiser blocks, and had the FCD wired in. I have to order the fittings for the new High Performance pump which took some time to track down, so I wasn't able to have them in on time. But Dustin took care of the wiring so it will pretty much be plug and play (the pump runs full time when the car is on, which I wouldn't of had done if I wasn't upgrading to a larger pump)

Wow the car is super smooth, what a difference going from the old GEN2 non-LSD e153 setup to this new GEN3 LSD E-153 setup. Its amazing what a difference the trans made in drive-ablity under boost and WOT. Before there was some decent torque steer that you had to fight when going WOT, not any more. In fact, there is no Torque steer at all! Manny and I went out for a test drive, and I had him drive. OMG, HE IS INSANE!!! Well he REALLY made sure the Celica was up to par under ALLLLLL types of driving conditions to say the least. To prove to me that there was literally no torque steer at all, he put the car in 3rd on the highway and went WOT, only touching the steering wheel with one finger.

The car is so crazy smooth under WOT compared to old setup. Its hard to explain unless you are in it, but it doesn't feel like you are going fast or are making decent power at all.......Except for the fact that you are pinned in your seat and the needle on the speedo is racing around the speedo so fast that you would have any idea, or realize how much power you are actually making. You get to a 100 in a hurry which is only 3rd gear, its amazing.

I have to still play around with the FCD because im still hitting boost cut. I want to be at the very bitter edge when the FCD clamps the voltage to the ECU, because the car goes 100% duty at 17 psi. Boost cut is around 18-19psi. I haven't played with it much yet, but Manny told me the screw is very sensitive, so we will see how it goes.

I am very happy with it so far.

hehe i've been waiting for this post, jim.
good to hear you are enjoying the setup.
and hey, like i said, i'd much rather somthing break while you were here, than have it go on you on the way home or whatever.
...thats my excuse, and im sticking to it. laugh.gif
i must agree on th LSD setup. much, MUCH smoother on boost, and the fact that its with even more power than he had before, makes it even more awesome.
nail it on the highway, and she tracks smooth and straight.
like i said, buy a multimeter, jim, and TINY adjustments on the FCD. wink.gif once you open the cover, and see how small the screw is, you'll see why i say tiny...lol

Thats great to hear.
Part of that smoothness is because the 2nd gen efi system just sucks total ass compared to the 3rd gen setup.

What kind of fcd are you using?

15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned
symtech FCD

330whp 309ft/lbs @ 21 PSI
make sure that its the type that just clamp the voltage once it gets to 17psi. A lot of the generic ones are just a potentiometer that scales the entire voltage from the map sensor. This would work on a 2nd gen, but would be a really bad idea on a 3rd gen.

15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned
Thanks art, yes its an active clamp style FCD. Only clamps voltage at desired psi/voltage.

naa, art, im not talking about the motor at all, although yes, it IS much better than the 2nd gen as far as engine smoothness on and off boost as well.

the smoothness im talking about is when you go WOT, and in an s54 or e153 non lsd, you get that torque steer feeling thru the wheel, and the more power you have, the worst it is (shannons car comes to mind for an extreme example)
with the LSD, you get NONE of that.
it really is worlds better.

Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)13.6@108MPH, 5SFTE Powered
Ah I see what you mean.

15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned
Jim, after looking around a bit and reading this here we would want the magic # to be around 4.10v, right now yours is set at 4.59 IIRC.

ST205: V = 0.1025*psi + 2.3293 up to a maximum of 5V

honestly I'm not sure if boost cut is at 17 or 18 psi (I've read people use both on different forums)

so if boost cut is at 17psi, you would want it to read 4.07v, if it's 18psi then 4.17v.

Adjusting the unit is easy if you have a multimeter and your compressor. Give your MAP sensor 20psi, then check the voltage like the directions say (positive to the output to the ECU (grey with black stripe going into the engine harness) and negative to the strut tower for ground). At 0psi it will read 2.32, then with 20psi it will read 4.59 like we set it. There is the adjustment screw inside the box, just turn it a hair counter clockwise to decrease the voltage #. Basically, give psi, check voltage, turn screw until it reads 4.17 or a bit lower. I'm going to put mine in and adjust it tomorrow, I'll have some pics for you then.

Congrats guy, the car is done, at least for a little while until you upgrade more smile.gif

my st205 swapandour Beams swap
Thanks Dustin, yea I read that as well and from a few of the other posts I have read it seems the INJECTORS go 100% duty at 17psi and thats where you want to clamp the voltage, and 18psi seems to be boost cut. The stock map may just be a bit slower to read, or respond to 18+ psi then my autometer gauge, because like I said earlier, when Manny and I went out we seemed to hit 19psi for a quick while before boost cut.

Nice, yea the FCD is a sweet little unit, you will be happy with it once you iron out your issues with it.
