He can't yet because he's going in as a beginner and there are a lot of restrictions I guess. He explained everything towards the beginning of this thread

>This may be a stupid qeustion, but since you added the all wheel drive system and roll cage, is the car considerably slower than before?
Or does the weight reduction kinda cancel out the added weight?

Lol, removing some plastic and adding a fkload of steel doesn't = weight reduction.

It = weight increastion

I think for a beginning rally driver, the AWD will help alot competitive wise, It's probably better to be gutless and have traction than to have power and no traction, but

most people say, it's best to learn in a 2wd as it teaches you control, it's far too easy and makes a lazy driver for someone that can put their foot down, turn the steering wheel and drive like it's an arcade game.

I know if I was to start rallying I wouldn't begin in my GT4, It's crazy quick on the road, I'd just kill myself on gravel if I gave it any sort of push.

Well, it was fun, but didn't last long.

I've had some trouble starting the car when it got hot pretty much since i've built the thing. I changed the starter/alternator, ran some huge grounds and power wires directly to the starter.... nothing. The felt like it was down on power. I knew it was going to be slow but, not this slow.

Anyways this will be a long story, we start the first stage... Waste Management I, it's known as the toughest stage (on the car) in north america. Rocks the size of watermelons everywhere. I have some huge gouges in my 1/4" aluminum skidplate and I only ran 4.5 miles. At one point the car stalls out going around a sharp turn.

Car didn't want to turn over... over 40-45 sec it finally does as my dad was getting out to put up a triangle. I go about another mile, same thing happends. I blew the 250 amp fuse coming from the battery staying on the starter for like 15 seconds straight. No electrical.

We pull over, right next to a polish team in a STI who blew out their clutch. I was scrambling out of the car to get out and short the blow fuse from the battery so I could get electrical back and try and get the car started. One of the guys said your car might be on fire. Pop the hood, radiator was cracked shooting coolant onto the manifold. At that point I knew it was done.

After we get pulled out to a spectator area and we watched the field come back through. It was kinda funny because we were at the VIP tent, the DJ interviewed us. (We werent allowed to leave the area till the 3rd stage was over; I broke on the 1st). A tow truck guy helped us out we shorted the fuse and got the car started again. It had time to cool down and started fine.

We drove it back to service and started wrenching, went to autozone to try and find another radiator. I tried adding another 2 guage wire to the starter, before we started swapping the radiator I wanted to go for a test to see if it would start after running it for a while. As I pull out heard some clanking. Go out on the road, wind 2nd out and couldnt even get over 4800 rpms. As soon as i push in the clutch car dies. Marbles in the engine!!

Rod knock. I got it started, but didn't even come close to having enough power to make it up the hill so I shut it down. Dad came down and we towed it back to service. I knew that was it, no hope of getting back in today. Then went and watched my buddy run the super special.

Not sure what I want to do now. Supposed to run in august, need to decide on an engine.

I'll post some pics later, my camera is with a crew member for my buddy. They are still running, we took off and I'm back home.

AWD will make it slower, but shouldnt cause the engine to self destruct. I believe it was on its way out for a while. 230k miles.

Not sure what I want to do now..... 3SGE, rebuild a 5sfe, i dunno. Wish there was a USDM engine that put out more power NA.

To bad the 20v 4age wont mate to the tranny kindasad.gif sorry to hear about this.
Could V6 be an option ? Most toyota V6 will bolt on to the awd trans
I havent had enough time to search, but yes a small v6 would be great. I'd buy a beams, but parts availability has me a little worried.

V6 under 2.65 liters might be tough though.

I'm thinking of buying something like this.

Cheap, non-beams 3SGE. I'd have to deal with the wiring, but I wont have to grind the engine block down to get the E154F transmission to fit... correct? About 40 more HP on the 5sfe.

wiring will be fairly simgle, won't be a total nightmare, but I think the block will still need to be grinded, their listing says 3sge ST205, but the ST205 was never release with anything other than a 3sgte, so that 3sge engine is configure closer to a 5sfe ( external-wise )

with a Beams engine there are a handful of sensors you need to worry about, that you have to make sure you get with your engine set, but most of the maintenance stuff is the same as the 3sgte ( of the same year ) so except for sparkplug cables, you can get pretty much all maintenance parts locally.

Wow... awesome project... I wish I had that kind of money to throw into a car.

Scraps
Wouldn't the 3sge engine be a direct fit for the awd trans? It isn't a 5sfe block it's 3s. But I guess we'll have to wait and find out

I dont understand, You don't want to get a beams because of the rarity of parts? But a 3sge is ok? Are non beams parts that much easier to find?

Isn't the non beams just a 3sgte without the turbo? Should be the same gaskets and internals

I wouldn't think so, i would think the 3sgte parts would be beefier to hold the extra boost. But i may be wrong, Ive never looked into it.

I know that the 2grfe will bolt up to your trans. But you said you cant have a 2650cc or higher. I was thinking might the 4grfse (2.5 lexus v6) bolt up to your transmission? just a thought.

BTW awesome build keep it up!

4gr is a good idea and why wouldn't a 3sge bolt up? its VERY similar to a 3sgte

proud =3sgte SWAPPED= '95 Celica ST owner [calling it the GT2 or half-trac]309,000 miles n' ....dead-> ALIVE AGAIN!! ~14,000 miles driven
the 4grfse would be a decent engine for this and it does mate to the AWD e154F, problem would be cost and wiring. is a relatively new engine which will make it hard to find and expensive, and since noone that I know has installed this engine on a Celica, it'ld be a new path that will come with its set of challenges, as much as I'd love to see this engine installed, I think beause of time limitations and the fact that once he advances on the racing program he'll upgrade the engine anyways, I think a cheaper / easier to install engine is better suit for his application.

so that send us back to 3sge / 3sge BEAMS which will require minimun wiring work to get going, mounts match and at most they'll require some grinding to the block that he has done before and won't be much of a road block.
3s-ge and gte are very similarly laid out motors, while the internals differ vastly, alot of the ancillaries almost identical if not interchangeable.

Well the fact that the non-beams is 1k less in price might have something to do with it.

As far as grinding the block... I thought the 3sge and GTE had the same exact block?

you may be right, I coudln't confirm that with part numbers, but I've read of people using 3sge ( beams and regular ) cylinder block as a base for the 3sgte builds so you can very well be right about it and save yourself the grinding step.

Not true at all.

hmm,3sgte stronger pistons, rods, crank, oil squirters, metal headgasket, lower compression (bigger) head chambers, different cam profiles (peak power at earlier).

Well why not just build a 5sgte. Then save the turbo for later. So essentially a 5sge.
